Namaskar to everyone...

Hey..
This is Satya from India. Hope you people remember me. I was the student blogger for the month of October, 2007. You can have a look at my posts here and here too..
Things have changed a lot since then. I'm now doing engineering final year. I've got a job in an MNC. If possible, I'll post some pictures of my village this time...

This month is my English-Learning month, that is to say, I would do my best to learn English and get more other Knowledge as a margin profit as well. Of course, my dear friends (readers, bloggers) and teachers please do not hesitate to correct my English.

Sincere wishes
James in Taiwan

Hello again !

Hello everybody,

I am very glad to join the blog once again. I am feeling very nice to talk to you all here in the virtual world of bloggers of BBC English learning programme. I would like to introduce my self as a blogger of the month of August 2008.

Though, I couldn’t be a regular commentator but I was a regular reader of the blog. Everybody is busy in this world for the survival. Today, I am in office after weekend with fresh mind and adequate rest. Another five days are here to go. My days are as usual, from home to office and office to home. As busy as I wrote in my last blog from 8:30 in the morning to the 5:30 in the evening for the office work.

My parents are here with me for these 15 days. My dad was sick so he came from my home town for treatment. Though it is 12 hours journey, for good treatment everybody has to come to Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. Before coming here he had a severe pain around heart. The day he left home he saw some rashes in that area. Since it was around the heart we were worried about the heart problem as he is a patient of Blood pressure for last 20 years. But the case was different; it was Herpes Zoster (medical name) which is also called shingles. I am talking about this illness because anyone can have this kind of disease at any time of his or her age. Its better to know about it because when we treat on time its fine but when the time passes the pain can remain from 3 weeks to a year. Some of you might be aware of it but for some of us it's good to know about. I am telling this because when we went to see doctor, doctor said that it’s little bit late but he prescribed some medicines.

The cause of this disease is the virus which remains in a suppressed way in our body who had chicken pox or small pox in their childhood and it comes out with a greater effect if our immunity system goes downThe pain is severe and the rashes also looks very deadly which comes in only one side but it can appear in any part of our body. I wanted to put some picture but it’s very deadly so please go through internet and look at it. Just type “Herpes Zoster”.

Instead of talking about interesting things I wrote about the disease because I thought that if I had known about it we could have gone to see skin doctor earlier and my father had to suffer less.

I will come up with some interesting pictures and interesting write up in my next blog.

My Father and Mother

Thank you very much to BBC English Learning Team for giving me this opportunity.

Wish you all the very best!

Kiran

Hello from Pakistan!

Hey up Friends!

A pinch and a punch for the first of the month!

It's great to be back again. A little introduction of me, I'm Naheed Shoukat Ali from Pakistan who became part of this blogland in June 2007. These blogs are a best way to brush up on your English so everybody out there, be a part of this community of learners. Talking of blogs, I would like to say Hello to my Teacher Jo Kent, during the time of our blogging then she taught me so many things which are still helping me out to improve my English. Jo, hope to see you soon over here. I will be looking forward to meeting all those wonderful teachers who blogged and taught us so much about the English language.

Well friends, I have been working as a yoga instructor for a month which is a great experience for me. So now along with my studies, I'm woking as well. Let's see what next is to come.

Many greetings from Slovakia!

Hello everyone! I do hope you are all doing well.

This is Anita, the former student blogger (Sep 06)

It seems to me that the year 2008 is somehow unique, as the BBC LE team gave us the opportunity to blog and catch up with each others at the beginning of the year and now, in December, the year’s last month. Thank you so much! Wow! How exiting!

Well, firstly I would like to greet everyone who is taking part in the open blog – student and teacher bloggers, commentators. I do hope that my teacher, Lewis Davies will have a little time for us because I am so curious to see his pictures of his baby boy, Oscar and to hear his news. Please, do not keep me waiting for too long, Lewis.

I cannot express how happy I am to write again. However, I am afraid I cannot manage the time to write every day. December is a very, very busy month at my work and as a mother and wife I am usually snowed under with work in December getting ready for Christmas as well. But I will try my best, promise.

I have visited England twice this year. Firstly, I was in Reading in June when my daughter graduation ceremony was and secondly a week ago in London. I would like to write you about my journeys to the UK and send a lot of pictures. As I said, I got back home just last Tuesday so I have already experienced a little of the Christmas atmosphere in England and I have a big surprise for you all but I do not want to let the cat out of the bag. I have attached a couple of photos of the Christmas lights in Regent Street, Carnaby Street in London.

Quick guide to the third photo: my daughter and me on the London Eye

OK, I will end here hoping to hear from you all soon. I want to wish you a great time reading the entries, writing posts and comments, looking at the pictures.

Take care! See you soon,

Anita

A message from Leila to you all

A big hello from Finland, this is Leila calling: I am the November 2007 student blogger. It is so nice to see, that so many familiar people continue writing week after week. Not only those of us, who have had an advantage to be student bloggers, but mainly those, whose keep on giving the necessary feed back.

Since November 2007 so many things have happened in the world, some good and some not so good. On a personal note, I am still in the same job as a year ago. I am also a year older and hopefully a little bit wiser.

Last week I was fortunate to have a short holiday, we went to Tunisia and I am pleased to share two pictures taken during our visit. The first photo was taken in the ancient Karthago. The other picture is from President Habib Bourguiba Mausoleum.

In Finland we are experiencing the darkest time of the year, the weather is dismal and the darkness just seems to enfold us in.

But how are you my global friends?

Hello Pals...

Hi to everyone.. especially to Naheed, Leila and Anita...

Its been pleasure for me to read your posts here. I experience a kind of nostalgic feeling.
Today.. I would write my experiences in campus placements.. In India, all the companies would come to engineering colleges and recruit final year students into their companies. The same happened in my college too.. We call the entire process as Campus Placements. My Campus placements stunts are as follows..........

TCS ... Experience the Unexpected

" Mr. Padala S Narayana Reddy*." , I heard a voice calling me..

Yes.. I got selected in Technical Interview... great... what should I do now.. How should I manage MR round...

This was how my thought process was when he called me. When I reached him, he asked " Are you Mr. Padala S Narayana Reddy?"
"Yes,sir .. I am..." , I said showing a sense of pride.
" You may leave." , he said going through some papers in his hand.
A trembling statement. Experiencing the Uncertainty... Experiencing the Unexpected....

I did not want to lose the first company that had come to the college...
I tried my level best to get through... but... still, I could not....

I was going... going where? .. I did not know... may be.. to canteen.. or to room... but I was going...
I worked hard... I had gone through many books... study material ... and what not?

Hey up friends!

How are you all doing? I hope you are very well.

I´m so glad to participate in this blogfest. I´m looking forward to keeping in touch again with all our wonderful teachers and friends.

Well, here´s a little about me. I´m Ana Paula, the April 2007 student blog and for 15 days last September I had the honour to repeat this amazing experience of blogging. Alex and Simon, I hope we can catch up with each other here. Anyway, the end of this year is being quite busy to me. I´ve just passed my university exams entrance and I´m really happy because finally my dream is starting to become true. I´m going to study English-Portuguese and the Literature of both languages in my university course. Apart from that, my FCE exam is just around the corner, as a matter of fact, my oral exam is this week. Although I´ve been studying for the exam for almost two years, I can´t avoid the anxiety feeling. Well, I guess this is a common feeling among people who sit for an exam.

All the best,

Ana Paula.

PS- Anita, Naheed and Leila, I´ve just loved it your pictures :-).

Tuesday, my on-call day of outside.

Hello everyone,

Today is my on-call day of outside; it’s a whole day long work, from morning, afternoon, evening and night, waiting the call from my office policeman. It’s a duty of on-call; every prosecutor is in turn per day. And what thing I got to deal with? In a short saying, “examine corpse”.

If there is any person who died a non-ill death, the county police have to report to Ilan Prosecutors’ office, and the Prosecutor’s office policeman immediately dials the on-call prosecutor who needs to summon a team including clerk, forensic doctor. And, a driver will drive us to the scene to examine the corpse, to invest the case, and to collect the evidence. Most of cases in Ilan County were car-accident, to commit suicide. The commit suicide cases have been rising in latest 5 years. Ilan County has 2,143 km² area and 461,010 populations.

I drove 12 minutes to office this morning, waiting on-call at my office room during the work time which is from 8:00 am to 17:30 pm, I got 1.5 hour break at noon which is from 12:00- 13:30 pm.

Today’s cases till now are:
morning= 0 (safety in Ilan)
afternoon=0 (safety in Ilan)
evening&night= unknown

I got to wait even after my off-work at home, till tomorrow morning 8:00 am. I am still on-call now.

The following photo is my office room, one prosecutor got one room, There are 18 prosecutors in Ilan county. The stuff of what I have in my office room are a computer set (include printer), a TV, a fax (+ copy), 2 lines of Telephone, 2 air conditions, a fan, a shredder.

James

Best wishes, Blessing safety to all of you and me.
James

A huge thanks

Hi Ewa, nice to hear from you too, you also seem to know what it is like to live during these dark months. Hyoshil it is good to see you are with us, my family is well thank you for asking. Bia I was pleased to know you also have been to Tunisia. Cris, Argentina is one of the places I want visit one of these days and in particularly Buenos Aires I want to come to, it does sound so grand. Cheikh Vall thank you for your kind words, the dark months in Finland last from October onwards and yes it does feel like for ages, although already at the end of February the days are much longer. James it was good to see you entries.

My family is well; I want to share a picture of my daughter Katri dressed up as an Easter witch. The picture was taken many, many years ago, when Katri was about seven years old. The other picture was taken a month ago while my father visited us for a lunch.

Best as always...

Hi from Buenos Aires, Argentina!

Hiya friends,

I’m so glad to have another opportunity to blog. It’s kind of an addition, you know.

For all that don’t know me, my name is Cristina. I’m Argentinean; I live in the fascinating and charming Buenos Aires. I was the student blogger of April 2008.
I’m married to my loving husband Oscar.

I’m an accountant and work in an office with another 2 colleagues (Lidia and Mabel) and 2 university students (Esteban and Alejandro).

I’m lucky to work 7 hours per day from Monday to Friday. I go to the gym twice a week. I passed the FCE exam many years ago and now I try to practise the language by reading books, browsing BBC web page, speaking and writing to many foreigner friends including all of you.

Well, my life hasn’t changed so much since April 2008, except that I’m 8 months older :- )

Last week Oscar (my husband) and I came back from our one-week-holiday in Mendoza (a province of Argentina). Mendoza is well known because there are a lot of wineries and vineyards. As a matter of fact all the best wines come from there.

But I don’t want to make this blog longer. I’ll speak about my trip in my next blog and show you some pictures.

It’s all for today………..

See you,
Cris

English course at the British Council Slovakia

Hello friends! How are things with you?

Dear Leila, thank you for your kind wishes. Please, give my best regards to your family. Katri is a nice little witch in the picture. I was lucky to be in Tunisia in 2000 and we also visited Karthago. Thanks for the photos.
Hi Ana Paula! I am so happy for you! Wow, what a good idea to study English-Portuguese and the Literature of both languages. The best of luck with your studies!
Hello Naheed! Have your mother and sister got back from England?
Hi James, Satya! Nice to meet you again! I am looking forward to your next entries.
Hello Kiran! I wish all the best to your parents. Hope that your father will be better soon.
Dear Renata! No, I have not met our teacher Stephen yet but you are almost right. Watch this space.
Hi my old friend Hyoshil! I am always glad to read your comments. I know, you also like the excitement of F1. I am sure; you were happy when Hamilton won the Championship. I was a little sad as I kept my fingers crossed for Massa. Just one point…Never mind! Next year…
Dear Ewa! Thanks for your comment. Brighton is beautiful. Brighton Pier is famous for its thrilling rides. I am sure; you also took advantage of the fantastic views of the Brighton coastline.

I took part in a competition that was organised by British Council Slovakia and related to Learn English pages printed in Sme (Slovak newspaper) and Uj Szo daily ( written in Hungarian) in April. I simply found all the answers to the Quiz questions and sent them all together to the British Council Slovakia. A couple of weeks later I received an e-mail in which I was notified that the prize winners were chosen at random and I am one of the winners. The prize includes a free English course at the Bratislava British Council Teaching Centre. I was so surprised that I cannot tell you. Am I the winner? I have never won anything except for the opportunity to be a blogger on the BBC LE website. I could hardly believe it so I made a phone call …and they told me that I really had won the course. Well, I have taken my course since September and it is almost to the end, unfortunately.

My family’s life has changed since I started my English classes. But I have a lovely husband who understands my desire to be more fluent in English so he drives me to Bratislava for my classes twice a week. Bratislava is about 55 km away from our house. We usually set off at 8:30 a.m. and are back about 1:00 p.m. Then I usually prepare the lunch and try to do everything that I would have done in the morning. The lessons are interesting. We do lots of listening practice so we can develop our ears to the language. However, our native speaker teacher, James speaks really quickly. Sometimes when he tells us a story I can only understand the context. But I think it helps me to make progress in effectively using English in the real world. My classmates are lovely and friendly. It is a really diverse class; the students come from different countries, such as Korea, France, Germany, Hungary and Slovakia.

Yesterday I took a couple of pictures of the building where the British Council is situated and of my classmates. Our teacher is the bearded man in black in the middle of the picture.

Well, I think this is getting long again. I’m looking forward to hearing what is new with you. Have a nice day! Bye, bye

Anita

Mountain Flights in Nepal !

Mountain flight is very famous in Nepal. Everybody who comes to see Nepal they love to go to see mountains on flight. Here in Nepal, we have some airlines that operate mountain flights. In Nepal we have 8 highest mountains out of 10 in the world including Mount Everest.

The most recommended time period is February to April and October & November a s prime time to enjoy the mountain flights. I haven’t got opportunity to go to see them however I have seen few while travelling from Kathmandu to my hometown . Somebody said about the mountain flight which I liked very much “It’s a different feeling as one comes face to face with the world's tallest mountain standing there in all its splendid glory, beautiful and enigmatic.”

I have some pictures to share with you.

Friends after these beautiful pictures, I would like to thank you all for the comments and wish for my father. He is now feeling much better and went home this morning.

Thanks a lot!

Kiran

Wednesday, life is as usual

Hello friends,
Today, life is as usual.

Daytime’s temperature is 26°C (79°F) in Ilan city, and it is a winter sunny day. Northwest wind is a bit stronger, Beaufort scale 3. I would like to show a photo as below, you can see the wind of blowing over my body, and what costume I dressed today for a daily work life at my office.

It

I drove 12 minutes from home to my office, 6 km far away. Our working time is 8:00-12:00, 13:30-17:30, we have a 1.5 hours lunch break, most people have their lunch at office and take a short half hour nap at office desk, it’s a habit of Taiwanese/China/Asian, sort of a hobby of Taiwanese. However, I have changed/quitted this noon-nap habit for many years. And, I drove back home for lunch and turned back to office afterwards. Taiwan time is GMT +8.

Writing to here, I found something which is new experience to me, Life as usual is a simple thing, but, to describe it in English is not so simple to me.

Best wishes,
James

My Feathered Friends....

Hello Everyone!

Thank you so much for your kind comments. Carmen, are you ready for some yoga lessons in our next meeting? I'm really glad to see your comment. This blogfest is a really wonderful experience. Speaking of this, James, you have posted wonderful shots.Your office seems to be at a height and what I can make out is that it's a mountainous region surrounding your work place. All the old memories are refreshing up and I'm very pleased to see your comment Marianna. And yes, both Marianna and Ewa, I'm at your service any time to teach you yoga. I'm still on a plane taking those mountain flights Kiran. The shots are amazing. Leila, I'm very pleased to know that you remembered me when you received those greetings in Arabic. I'm enjoying your posts very much. Anita, my mother and sister will be back in this month probably by next week. Ana, best of luck for your exam! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you:)

It is said that stroking a cat or any pet helps cure depression 'cause this keeps us busy for some time and we forget all that's on our mind. The best thing you get from this activity is a feeling of love and care which you are showing it for your pet and later on this also helps us make our relationships better with people in our daily life. I don't have any pet of my own but love looking at the sky in the early morning when the morning star is still shining up in the sky and birds are starting to get up from their sound slumber. There are so many pigeons around the place I live and it's so relaxing to look at them preening their feathers, some walking around, flying here and there, pecking on the grains. The air is fresh at that time so it's also a good time to breathe in fresh air and cleanse the respiratory system. I have been into this activity for years and have realised that this has brought about a good change in me. It is hardly we ever look around us what the nature has for us. We occasionally look up in the sky but see someday a little longer at it you will say I had been missing something in my life. Some pictures to show you of my pigeons:

See you soon,

Naheed

The Art Of Recycling

Hello my friends!

Thanks for all your lovely comments on my blog. It´s really fantastic to catch up with you all again.

Sometimes we don´t even imagine that some people can make art with things we just want to throw away. The NGO "Filhos da Terra" ( Chlidren of Earth) from Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro has the aim to arouse ecological conscience and social responsibility among teenagers through the art. Last month I could see their work in a cultural center here in São Paulo. Recycled paper, onion peels and other materials non-industrialised were used to create delicate paintings framed in bamboo. Here are some pictures:

They are adorable, aren´t they? Looking at these kind of art makes me smile :-).

Now let me chat a bit with you all.

Hey Simon! I´m curious to know whether you watched City of Men.

Ricardo, are you from Brazil?

Hey Bïa! How is the bookclub project going?

Filippo, I´m not going to quit my job. Actually, I have to work to pay my studies, so I´ll still have to work 7:00am till 5:00pm and then attend the classes in the evenings ( 6:30pm).

Hi Ernesto! You´re right. I know it´s just the beginning of a long journey...

Leila, it´s always wonderful to hear your stories. I love your pictures.

Ooh Marianna, we have to find time in order to achieve our goals. Otherwise we feel stuck in time.

Thanks Renata! I´ll really need a bit of luck :-).

Hi Hyoshil! How are you and your lovely son doing? Well, I´m going to study here in my city because it´ll be easier to keep helping my mum. Thanks for your advice.

Cris, I´m looking forward to reading about your trip to Medonza.

Anita congrats! I was very excited when I read you won the contest :-).

Naheed, I´m looking forward to meeting you this weekend. You are such a good Yoga instructor. Maybe we can try the crane pose this Saturday :-).

Hi Hania! Thanks for your kind wishes.

Well friends, I have to bid you farewell now. See you soon,

Ana Paula.

Anauê

Hi lovely friends.

I can't describe in words how exciting is to participate in this blogfest and meet everybody...the commentators, the staff and former bloggers as teacher or students. Kisses to everyone.

Maybe some of you know me. I’m Adriana, the September 2007 student blogger from Brazil. The title is a Tupi greeting I've used in one of my blogs by the time.

I learn english as a hobby. So I love to read the lot here, especially the blogging area. It brings ludic moments for me.

Unfortunately, I haven’t been so free to do that recently for 3 reasons:

I’m involved in the final touches in order to move in two weeks to my villa.

It’s been raining cats and dogs (and ducks, horses, whales, everything) here so that we need to help people who has been affected by the floods.

Yesterday, we had an important meeting at work and I’ve been working very hard.

So, I’d like to apologyze if I can’t write a decent blog yet but I promise to do my best for the next one.

The fourth day of December, life is still the same.

Hello there,

If life is as usual, it is sort of happiness nowadays.

I would like to quote a comment which was posted by Renata from Romania.

“Hello James! I have been reading your posts with pleasure. If I had that lunch break for an hour and a half, I guess I would have listen to English podcasts on my office computer. :-) Keep writing to us, good wishes. “

Why do I quote this comment? Renata brought up a good idea, and I would like to share with you.

This morning, I detoured my way to office for taking my father to a hospital to see a cardiology doctor. And I took a shot of the hospital. The business of the hospital is blooming; the recession is out of their way

Best wishes,
James

Hello friends!

I do hope everyone is feeling better than me. I have got a terrible sore throat and I have a throaty voice. In the morning I had my penultimate English lesson and I had to go out of the classroom as I was coughing all lesson long.

I am sipping a mug of herbal tea with honey and lemon at the moment and I am thinking about all of you. I would like to be somewhere, where the sun is shining, where the weather is warm and not as rainy as it is here. I would like to sit in a bar with Ana Paula or Adriana and have a glass of caipirinha (Stephen Keeler’s favourite drink) instead of my herbal tea. Oops, it is not a good idea as Adriana wrote about torrential downpours and people who have been affected by the floods. I was sorry to read about that, Adri. You do not need to apologize. Anyway, I am glad you have joined as. A big Hello! Ana Paula, you are on my mind the whole day. I am sure, your FCE oral exam went well. The photos are really interesting. I like people’s ingenuity and children and teenagers surely have the ability to think of clever new ways of doing something. Speaking of the art and seeing Naheed’s feathered friends something got to my mind which you all but Marianna certainly might like. I visited the National Gallery in London for the second time and I saw Picasso’s Child with a Dove in the flesh. Have a look at here if you are interested. I absolutely love this picture. How about you? I am deeply impressed by the National Gallery because firstly, they ask for donations rather than make visitors purchase a ticket and secondly I was able to see my favourite picture by Vincent van Gogh, The Sunflowers click amongst Van Gogh’s Chair click and other pictures. I spent a whole morning there seeing Titian’s pictures click Impressive and marvellous…

James, I was sorry to read that the healthcare is sliding into depths of recession, too. We also have problems in the car and building industry due to financial crisis. Hope your father is doing well. Thank you for your comment. I quite often reread the previous blog entries. I always find new words, new phrases there or just refresh my memory.
Hello Kiran, your pictures are breathtaking.
Hi Cris, even thought I have not been a commentator on your blog I have been reading your entries. So, it is time to make friends. Do not you think so? I am looking forward to your write-up.
Ernesto, I take it as a compliment when you say my daughter and me look like sisters.
Thank you Marianna for your kind words too. You are both really kind.
Hi Renata! I am glad you are interested in my entries. I would be happy if I met St. Keeler or my teacher, Lewis or Amy or Jo or Rachel or everyone else amongst teachers, student bloggers and commentators. It would make my day!

OK, it is time for another cuppa. See you soon. Take care,

Anita

OUR TRIP TO MENDOZA

Hi bloggers (students/teachers) and readers,

First of all I want to tell you that our trip started badly but fortunately it turned out to be good.

We were heading for Mendoza in our car, on a sunny and windy Saturday, the roads were empty and all was perfect. Mendoza is about 1.000 km from Buenos Aires. Well, after driving about 465 km (that is in the middle of our way) our car broke down. Something had happened with the automatic gear. To sum up, after 4 hours we had to be towed from there back to Buenos Aires :- (

Thank God I could convince Oscar to let the car in our garage and go to Mendoza by another means of transport. Finally we went to Mendoza by plane 3 days later.

Mendoza is situated by the Cordillera de los Andes (the Chile boarder). Thus, it’s a mountainous region. The scenery is outstanding. I took over 300 pictures but don’t panic I only posted some of them for you.

Mendoza has also a lot of parks, which are polished every day. That’s really amazing.

As I mentioned in my previous blog, this province produces the best wines. It has the perfect climate for that. We visited a winery, which makes high quality Argentine wines and of course we were offered to taste them.

a grape that will be ready to be collected in February

Needless to say, we had a good time and enjoyed our stay there. But on the other hand I missed Buenos Aires and wanted to come back.

Now I want to thank all of you for your comments.

A.Paula, hope you passed your FCE exam. How was the oral part? I was thinking of you all day.

Naheed, I deeply need to practice yoga.

Steve (Esteban my officemate) and Raúl (Esteban’s father), hope you have enjoyed the pictures.

Alessandro, Brazil is one of my favorite countries. Luckily I’ve been to Brazil many times and I have to admit that you have the best beaches.

Hania, do I have energetic and lively activities? Wow!

Carmen, I’m happy to see your comment. By the way, I’m a decent woman.

Thienloi , I’m neither an alcoholic addicted but I like the process to make wines, from a single grape to the liquid in the bottle.

Anita, I’m reading your posts, sorry I didn’t leave a comment but actually there are so many student blogs and I have not so much time….. Anyway, I’m happy for the course you won. It’s a unique and interesting experience.

James, I admire you for taking your time to blog every day. I know that Dr. James is a very busy person :- )

Kiran, your pictures are amazing.

Adri, I’m glad that you took the time to write something. Hope everything is OK and you and your lovely family will move to your new villa. You can upload some pictures.

Well, I have to sign off now.

Have a nice weekend,

Cris

Dec. 5th--- Welcome a commentator from Taiwan.

Hello there,

Welcome Mr. /Ms. Grant who is a newcome commentator from Taiwan. A few days ago, I read a comment posted by Grant from Taiwan, that is an exciting thing to me. There are many readers from Taiwan but hardly finding a commentator. And Grant said that s/he also seldom takes a nap at noon.

Speaking of taking a nap at noon, Toni, a commentator from Barcelona Spain said:” here in Spain me make "siesta". I didn't know that it was usual in Asia. Here is more a topic than a reality. Anyway, I make everyday 20 minutes into my car. Sometimes I think that somebody could think that I'm dead or similar, but it doesn't matter me. I feel Ok, and after my performaces are better” .
Very good, Toni, I have learnt a new word “SIESTA” from you, thank you. A siesta means a short nap taken in the early afternoon, often after lunch, the word “siesta” is Spanish which is from the Latin hora sexta. I am very happy to learn a new word. And, I wonder how British say it?.

This early morning, I attended a funeral. For all I know, in Taiwan, the average period from people died to bury will be in 45 days; I heard there is a custom that a funeral should be held in 24 hours, it's quite different though.
By the way, I found the word “bury” mean something else which is:” Bury is a town in Greater Manchester, England “

Here is a photo of a funeral today in Taiwan.

Best wishes, and may you heath and safety.

A little devil and an angel are coming!

The Eve of St. Nicholas…

Hello friends!

I would like to share with you our customs and traditions here in Slovakia during December. The first holiday is the eve of St. Nicholas on 5th December.

If I am not wrong the eve of St Nicholas passes without notice in Britain. I am surprised that the British children have not found out what they are missing. You can imagine how exciting a time it is for children when St. Nicholas arrives in a horse drawn coach with his big bag full of sweet surprises.

Children clean their shoes and put them in the windows. The next morning the shoes are full off chocolate, fruit, nuts, sweets and so on. But bad children get a piece of coal and birch as well. These things are brought by Santa Claus or Father Christmas to the shoes. In spite of the fact that my children already know that I am the Santa Claus they always get their favourite box of chocolates. In Slovakia, Hungary and the Czech Republic, Mikulas is often accompanied by an angel who acts as a counterweight to the ominous devil- Krampus, the frightening helper who wants to take away the bad children.

If you are interested you might have a look at here and read more about customs around the world. How do you celebrate this day? I am looking forward to reading your comments about that.

I have prepared gifts; bead Santa Clauses, which are ready to be given away today

These Christmas decorations were made by my daughter 5 years ago

Take care, my friends, and I hope to hear from you soon. Now I must skedaddle and polish my shoes - perhaps Santa Claus stops… Who knows?

Buses, rikshaws and taxis in Karachi

Hey up Friends,

Hope you are all well, Anita, your works are fantastic and thinking of chocolates and goodies is making my mouth water, yum yum yum!

Well friends, the best thing about Karachi is its public transport. Everyday is fun when you come up with a new story as a commuter. As you can see the title of my post, get ready to travel on the bus of Karachi with me. Well, the buses are very colourful from the outside and when you get on the bus the more is come to entertain your eyes is the driver's seat. The part of the driver's seat is decorated with flares adorned with beads or you better say, you will get to see all kinds of decorative pieces. And the ticket checker's duty is to cram as many passengers as he can on the bus which is a real tough experience for the people who are already struggling hard to stand on their feet. When the bus starts its juorney the only thing you start praying is to reach your destination safe and sound. Well, apart from all those hardships of travelling on the bus, the best thing is the art which is done on the buses to make them look colourful. This art is also known as 'Truck Art' and is liked by everyone who visits Pakistan 'cause not only in Karachi but you can also see colourful lorries and buses in every part of Pakistan.

Some pictures of the buses which I captured in my camera.

In this shot you can also spot a taxi which is yellow and black in colour. There are two more types taxis over here, one is yellow and the other one is white. White taxis are rather luxurious and a bit expensive.

Okay this is rikshaw, a three wheeler and everyone's favorite too. We have two types of rikshaws one, as you can see on this shot and the other one is called 'Green Rikshaw' which is run by CNG (Compressed Natural Gas).

Thank you everyone for you nice comments.

Carmen, I knew that the walking pigeon is your favorite shot that's why I picked it up to be the first picture.

Mehjabeen, you are right BBC LE is best 'cause not only can we learn English but we can also meet new friends.

Hyoshil, it's really nice to see your comment, thank you! As for painting, I feel bad to say that I haven't painted anything for about 6-7 months but you have put this into my mind at the right time.

James, Thank you so much for your comments. Really, I always like your creative ideas.

Marianna, I'm thinking to post more pictures for you as I know you love painting birds on your canvas. So watch this space, I will post few more inspiring pictures for you.

Cris, thank you so much! You see what friends are for.. you don't have to tell them and they come up with something you are looking for.

Ana, I really loved your post about the art of recycling.

Thienloi, I can make the picture of your garden and your then pet dogs. Thank you for your comment

Friends, your comments worth millions.

Best wishes,

Naheed

How have I been today?

Hi there,
. How have I been today?
How have you been today, my friends? And who cares:”How have I been today? “The answer is: I do.
I need to take care of myself well if I want to help others. So be it, take care of yourself well.

We work 5 days and have 2 days off in a week which are Saturday and Sunday. Today, I stay with my family at home. The photo I post is that my wife (Wendy) and my daughter (Kelly) had a chinwag after dinner tonight. . We have a rule at home, that is: Folks should eat beside the dining table to have a chinwag, and they shouldn’t eat and watch TV at living room.
Wendy said: oops!

The word "Chinwag" is my new word which was learnt from Anita that she posted on BBCLE student open blog of Dec. 4th as a topic, thanks Anita.

Sincere and best wishes to all of you

James Wu (Wu Zhih Cheng), Taiwan.

St. Nicholas...

and another chit-chat about this and that

St. Nicholas (Mikulás) finally arrived at our village in the early afternoon

Children gave him a warm welcome and then recited him some nursery rhymes

To be honest I have already seen a nicer-looking Santa Claus. Sorry.

Hello friends,

Isn’t it fantastic that we can have a good chinwag together about everything under the sun, is it? I think that I can respond to everyone directly on my blog so nobody has to worry about the evaporated comments. Let’s go!

Hello James! My English teacher is an English native speaker, of course. Why is this course important to me? The answer is simple, because it is the only place where I can brush up on my English- mainly on speaking. No worries. It is unimportant to differentiate my classmates on the basis of their country. Penultimate means second from the last. My last English lesson is on 9th December so my penultimate lesson was on Thursday. I hope this helps. It was such a pleasure to read that I could show you a new word – chinwag. I see, you had a really healthy dinner- lots of fruit.
Hi Allesandro! Thank you for your point of view. I read it with interest.
Dear Marianna! I really appreciate all your comments. Thank you for the wonderful idea of visiting the Vienna’s Albertina. Even if I am feeling better I think that this cold is going around my family. Unfortunately, my husband has been sick too. You know, it is better for the sick to be cared at home rather than going to a museum. I am sorry for you that you cannot go.
Naheed, your entry about rickshaws, buses and taxis is really interesting. The buses in Pakistan look absolutely fabulous and they are so different from the buses I can see here in Slovakia. I liked the photos, as well. It seems to me that you took these photos from one place. Is it your room?
Cris, I am glad you enjoyed your journey even if you had some difficulties at the beginning of your journey. Thanks for the photos.

Well, I must be going. I am looking forward to reading your comments. Have a nice weekend!

Anita

Mulled wine

Dear Helen,

It is me again. I would like to help you. The best recipe for mulled wine which is tried and tested is Stephen’s Recipe written on 15th December 2006. I hope this helps.
Helen, your Christmas tree is beautiful. Enjoy the party. Best wishes,

Sunday, street sight in the evening, in Ilan city.

Hello there,

Today is Sunday; most people are taking a rest or having a fun outside. While the mantle of night is falling down, the stores on the street will close their door to have a break in the western nation area. However, in Taiwan, the store’s open time is always from 10:00 am to 22:00 pm. People could go shopping at a mall, a department, and buy much stuff in the stores in the evening till 22:00 pm. I took a photo of a night view of Ilan City Street at around December 7 2008 18:00 pm. You can see many stores were still opening, neon lights were shining everywhere. There are a pharmacy, a cell phone (mobile) store, a jewelry store, a commodity store, an electric appliance store, many foodstuffs (food products) store, and many many other kinds of stores. Those stores are often at the first floor, the owners live in the second and/or third floors. The cities in Taiwan don’t segment the house area and the business area, it means people live in the business area, and the stores are set in the house area. The situation are both convenient and inconvenient.

Incidentally, there is a night market opened till midnight (24:00) seven days a week. People can buy many food (fried chicken, etc.) and stuff over there. Click here to get more information.

(Sunday, 18:00, street sight in the evening, in Ilan city.)

Hello, want to buy something?

May you buy stuff conveniently in the evening.

A style of life: Three meals a day all in one.

Hello there,

Currently, people like all-in-one stuff, such as: A cellphone can have all-in-one with the functions of communication, internet-surfing, camera, and so on. Similarly to this, there is a style of life which is three meals a day all in one.

I took a day off today, and went to Taipei with my family to experience one meal a day only. Taipei is the capital of Taiwan, 60 kilometers north far from my hometown, Ilan city. An hour by car, there is a 12.9 tunnel on the way. We woke up late and eat a simple food like a piece of toast each in the morning, and drove to Taipei after early afternoon to enjoy an “afternoon tea- time buffet” at a restaurant of a grand hotel. It is an all-you-can-eat restaurant, which means you can eat whatever food they have offered. There are 5 areas of food which are salad, sushi, cooked foods, dessert and drink; more than 100 delicious dishes are provided and refilled all the time. From 14:30 to 17:30, we ate as much as we could. To us, this is a luxury and delicious meal, and the only meal we ate today as well. The “afternoon tea- time buffet” is namely our breakfast, lunch and dinner. We paid NT$ 550($13 Euro) each.

The following photo, from left to right are: Wendy, my Mom, Kelly (eldest daughter), and Kitty (younger daughter).

Please eat whatever you want.

May you keep away from hunger.

James Wu (Wu Zhih Cheng), Taiwan.

Festivals, yoga and friends...

Hello Everyone!

I hope you are all keeping well and thank you so much for your lovely comments. Hello Jo, it's really good to see your blog entry and many many best wishes for your new home. Seems like all the teacher bloggers are decorating their houses for Christmas. First we saw Helen's Christmas tree and Jo, I'm sure there must be some specific names of all those decoratives. I'm just trying to give it a go: 1)?, 2) Santa sock, 3) maybe a perfumed candle,4) Christmas tree, 5) Probably another Christmas tree.

Speaking of festivals, tomorrow we are celebrating Baqar Eid in which we sacrifice animals to mark the tradition of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him). Along with this, Muslims all over the world also perform Hajj (pilgrimage) to the holy city Makkah a day before eid. I will write some more about eid and with some photos as well.

Jo and friends, it would be a pleasure to give you some tips on yoga and some quick yoga poses for all those computer users. To make the most out of your yoga, it is important to keep a watch on the alignment of your body. Never push yourself too hard in the pose and first listen to your body and yoga will do the rest for you. Here are some yoga stretches to relax you while sitting on your computer chair. A small note: It is best to take your shoes off before doing these stretches, especially in case of high heels.

1-Cat-Cow stretch: Bring both feet flat on the floor.
Bring your hands onto your knees. On an inhale, arch the back and look up toward the ceiling. On the exhale, round the spine and let your head drop forward.
Repeat for 3-5 breaths.

2- Sitting tree pose: Bring both feet flat on the floor, now stretch both hands out above your head, interlace them together and stay in this position for 10 counts. Bend forward that your chest rests on the thighs and the hands will be just in line with the head making a 'V'.

3-Twist: The twist can be done by both sitting on the floor as well as on the chair.

Let me know how do you find these stretches like and I will post some more performing them myself.

Hey friends!

Dear Mehjabeen, thank you so much for you kind words! As for travelling on the bus, I often have to go through this trial:) By the way, where have you been?

Hey Carmen! Come to Karachi and I will be your guide and will show you so many more colourful buses. Hope your cough is better now:)

Thank you James! I always like reading your nice comments.

Pary, how are you? It's really good to see you here. Give my best love to your little angels.

Marianna, Today I took some more pictures of pigeons and a couple of shots of the sunrise. The sky was beautiful in the morning so couldn't resist to take some shots of the morning sun:) I will share them soon.

Hello Liz! Thank you for liking the pictures of the buses. It's almost our regular routine to travel by bus so yes, have got used to it somehow:) I also like to travel by rikshaw.

Karoun, thank you for your kind comment! I found your comment very interesting:)

Anita, I took those pictures from my parents' room.

Daria, this art is done by the people who have excelled in it.

It's time to say good night!

Don't forget to send your comments:)

Easter superstitions and Christmas magic

Hi everyone around the world, here in Finland we are in the middle of the darkest period of our entire year. Toni you asked me about the darkness. I guess we are so used it that we have learned to live with the dark. It is the time, when we gather strength by reading and contemplating, but no, we do not sleep through the winter. Marianna, thank you for your recipe, I am trying to honor it.

HYOSHIL you asked about Easter witch tradition. As it often is with major Holy days, certain superstitions are part of Easter also. People used to believe that witches were especially active and the magic was powerful during Easter week. Even in modern times (say about 30 years ago) it was believed that old women practiced black magic by hurting animals in their shelters. I do remember this very well from my childhood days, a few elderly women did used to do it.

According to tales, Easter witches move about by flying around with the help of a broomstick. In the Nordic countries, witches fly between Good Friday and Easter Sunday. According to popular belief, witches were old women who had sold themselves to the devil. In some parts of Western Finland, the custom of burning bonfires on Holy Saturday for scaring witches remains.

Why my daughter Katri in my previous blog was dressed up as an Easter witch? It is part of Easter celebration that children with sooty faces and scarves tied round their heads go begging, carrying baskets, coffee pots and bunches of decorated “virpovitsa” willow twigs.

Pussy willows are ancient Easter decorations. I am sorry to say that – no matter how we tried – Katri was not able to take off and fly! The broomstick just would not fly! In Finland children began walking around villages dressed as witches as early as the 1800s and they still do so.

Nice to see you Filippo are still here also. Hania my best to you! And my warmest regards to everyone, I want to wish you all a very wonderful Christmas time from the land of Santa.

CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS IN ARGENTINA

Hi everybody,

Today is December 8th (“Virgin Mary Day” so it’s a holiday here). As a matter of fact I’m really melting (36º C). This may sound strange for those who live in the north hemisphere. You are used to seeing Christmas trees covered with snow but...not here in Argentina. However, the hot and dull weather didn’t prevent me to put our Christmas tree up today.

We also put colourful lights (I’ll put them tomorrow because I’m a tad tired today). We light our Christmas tree every night ‘til December 31st.

We also put some decorations on our doors.

Our tradition is to put the Christmas tree up on December 8th until January 6th (when the 3 Kings- Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar- arrive). We usually put some presents around the tree to open them on December 24th just some minutes after 12 pm. Thus, on Christmas Eve we have a family gathering. We usually eat some salads and cold chicken or pork chops. Then, we have a dessert (usually ice-cream or a fruit salad). Having done this we all prepare a special table with some champagne, turrones, panettone and some dry fruits. We shouldn’t eat the latter since it’s not so good when it’s hot but …traditions are traditions.

What do you do on these days?

Jo and Helen, I like your Christmas Decorations. It seems that our tradition is similar to yours.
Anita, your decorations are lovely too and I found your customs very interesting indeed. I love your pictures.
A.Paula, I wish you the best for your written part of the FCE. I’ll say a prayer for you my friend. Relax and be more confident and less demanding.
Naheed, thank you so much for your tips on yoga exercises. By the way, I used to practise pranayama breathing and now that you mentioned it I started practising again. You are so far and so near at the same time.
Dr. James, I like your entries. Now that you are blogging everyday we know more about your life. Send my regards to your wife and daughters.
Carmen, hope you enjoy your Concert today and that you got over your cold.
Pary, it’s very nice to see you here too. I could store hundreds of pictures on my PC without any problem. My hard disk is big. Send my love to your lovely sons.
Marianne, I was sad to hear that you were in hospital in April. Are you OK now? I’m curious about your mom’s stories connected with Argentina. Hope you can tell us more about it. By the way you can freely call me Cris.
Mahajabeen, I’m happy that you enjoyed the pictures. Hope we can talk soon.
Beatriz, I didn’t have the opportunity to cross the frontier to Chile but everybody says that Chile’s landscape is wonderful. Maybe next time…

I must leave now.

Until next blog, see you around,

Cris

A bed in my office.

Hello there,

I have got a couple of corrections of my English mistakes from friends since December 1st I blogged here. Many thanks for those friends who wanted to contribute their corrections. Hopefully, I could get more corrections in the rest of December.

I take turns of an interior on-call today, what do I have to do? 1. A victim can report a crime to Prosecutors’ office, and I have to listen and ask my clerk to record it. 2. To interrogate a criminal suspect who is caught by the County policemen. 3. To apply a warrant of monitor to a judge if the county policemen requested. 4. To sigh a warrant of arrest.

My on-call time is from morning till night. There is a bed in my office fto be used by me, in case I have to deal the above things which happen at mid-night. But, I have not use it till now since it was set a year ago.

Allow me to present you a photo of the bed in my office.

Would you like to sleep on the bed?

Best wishes.
James Wu (Wu Zhih Cheng), Taiwan.

How It's Made

The big surprise…

Hi everyone,

I am sure; this title is known to most of you who like the Discovery Science channel. I am also one of those who watch this program on TV with great interest. Have no fear! I do not want to explain to you how rubber, a piano or something else is made. I just chose this title because I have had the chance to learn how the BBC Learning English webpage is made. Interested?

Well, I told you in my first entry that I have recently visited London. When my daughter, Csilla was at home in October she suggested that I visit her in London. At first I did not agree as I did not want to go alone and leave my husband and son at home. But she was quite stubborn – as usual - she had given me some time to consider before I made the decision and I said: “Why not.” And I flew there. So it was a mother and daughter meeting – just for 6 days. I stayed in Csilla’s and her friends’ shared house. I had known that Csilla would not be able to spend the whole time with me as she would have to work. It meant that I would have to spend some days without her so I had had to think of a plan what to do in London alone. But I had an idea!

I had written a letter to Caroline Dunton – to our lovely Carrie, about my heart’s desire to meet the BBC LE team, spend some time in the office and see what they do. Of course, she was very lovely and arranged it all. We agreed that Friday afternoon would be good. I went there very excited. My heart leapt when I stepped into the Bush House. ‘Don’t lose heart now.’- I told myself. And when I saw smiling Carrie at the door everything was OK. I was warmly welcomed by the team in the office. Carrie invited me for lunch in the canteen which was a good way to break the ice. After lunch we went back to the office where Carrie, William, Callum, Neil, Nuala, Jackie, Dima and finally Catherine showed me what they work on, how the page is made. I spent about a half hour with everyone and then they handed me over to another. I know some secrets but a secret is a secret and should not be told to others. I met the head of the BBC LE, Andrew as well. However, when we took the pictures he had already gone away. Unfortunately, Paul was out of the office. That is the reason why he is not in the picture. Everybody was really nice and I spent an unforgettable, lovely afternoon with the BBC LE team. I had a whale of a time in the office. Thank you so much for this opportunity to everyone, especially to Carrie.

Hello friends,

I trust you are all well. I do also hope that you are all happy and healthy. The most interesting part of this open blog is to respond to your comments. I see that the “Christmas spirit” have already hit most of you. Although I started to decorate our house with Christmas ornaments the other day I think I have not been in a Christmas mood yet.

Cris, your tree is really nice. We put our Christmas tree up only on 24th December.
James, I have told Santa to stop at your house but I cannot guarantee he will speak Taiwanese. Yes, mulled wine is called varene vino in Slovak and forralt bor in Hungarian. (You might remember that we speak Hungarian at home as my family belongs to the Hungarian minority living in Slovakia) James, you are a technophile. Your write-ups are really interesting.
Naheed, I have not started any yoga class yet but I will follow all your advice and tips on yoga. Thanks.
Leila, oh, your Santa Claus is really nice-looking. Thank you for the site. I was absolutely amazed to discover this site.
Ana Paula, Adriana, Kiran, Satya – hope it is all well with you.
Filippo, thank you for your kind wishes. Yes, Little Jesus brings gifts on December 24th.
Ewa, I am sorry for the lost comment. I am happy that you have not lost your patience to write a new one. Keep it up. Thank you.
Pary, I am glad you have been reading my entries. Oh, Pary you are in the enviable situation of having a new born. You know, I have two grown-up children I am always green with envy if I see a little baby. Wish you and your family all the best.
Toni, I am glad to read your comment on my blog. I spent a two-week holiday in Barcelona in 2002 and I felt immediately in love with the city. We also visited the Picasso Museum, of course. Hopefully, one day I will have saved up enough money to visit Barcelona again. I would also like to go to Madrid and see the Prado Museum – it is a must to see. Do you agree?
Dear Tiasha! I am well, thank you. I will never forget your kind words when my daughter was ill. How are your daughters? Thank you so much for the effective remedy. Please, keep commenting.
Dehghani, Thank you. I wish all the best for you too.

Lidia, Antonio,Yumiko! It would be nice to hear your news. I am looking forward to meeting you too.

Well, I should probably stop here for today. Have a nice evening. Take care,

Anita

Back To The Normal Routine.

Hello my friends!

How are you doing? I hope you´re enjoying your day.

You are all doing a wonderful work here. All the entrances are really fascinating and the pictures are really beautiful.

Well friends, this week and the last one were quite chaotic for me. As you may know, I was preparing for the FCE exam and yesterday I did the written part of the test. Anyway, yesterday was like an adventure. I should have brought my camera to take some pictures.
The day start at 4:00 am with a good breakfast. My friend and I were supposed to be on the road around 5:30am in order to avoid the terrible traffic in São Paulo. The exam would be 8:00 am. However, what we didn´t expect was that there was an accident and we were stuck on the traffic for more than 2 hours! The only thing we could see was the infinite line of cars ahead us while the time was passing by. We started to get nervous but finally we arrived in the examintaion center at 8:03 am and thank God we both were allowed to enter in the examination room. Apart from that, it´s hard to say if I did well or not in the test. This kind of exam are so tricky. I just know that I answered all the questions and now I have to relax and wait for the results release. Hmm... I think a cup of tea would be good now. Would you join me? :-)

Hi Simon! I´m looking forward to hearing your opinion about City Of Men. Oh, I´m craving for going to the cinema! :-).

Jo! I´m happy you bought your house! I wish that you and your fella lots and lots of happiness in your new home :-).

Amy, I hope you have a safe journey to Madrid :-).

Anita, how great you could meet the BBC LE staff in London! By the way, I´ve read that your sister would like to teach English here in South America. Is there possibility to her come to Brazil?

Bïa, I´m glad to know the bookclub project is going well. It´s always a pleasure to help you :-).

Hi Ewa! These piece of art were made by children and teenagers.

Hey Carminha! I went to this exhibition last month. It´s not being showed in SP now :-).

James! Thanks for your comment. I couldn´t manage to do the cool banner. I´ll read your instructions more carefully :-).

Oh MJ! You´re very kind. I hope we can talk soon.

Nino, the cat-cow strech is really helpful.

Cris, here is 35°C degrees. Your Xmas tree is lovely :-).

Talk to you all soon,

Ana Paula.

The left is U.K., and the right is U.S.

Hello there,

People always take the usual life for granted...

On the way to my office this afternoon, I drove along the right side of the road, a vision suddenly came to my mind. Many years ago, I went to Auckland, New Zealand to visit my brother-in-law, I drove two and half hours from Auckland to Rotorua, oops, the driving direction of the left side is totally different from the right side of Taiwan. All the 3 Taiwanese passengers who were in my car were all scared and carefully helped me watching the cars which would show up from the directions we were not aware.

The style of New Zealand is more like U.K., Its driving direction is the left side of the road, the same as U.K.
Taiwan, it learns from U.S. more than from U.K., we drive along the right side of the road as American do.

Therefore, if a car’s direction is along the right side of the road in a country, it is affected by U.S. Otherwise, it is a U.K. style.

The photo I took as below is the cars which drove along the right sight of the road this afternoon in Taiwan.

Best wishes & safe drive.

Sports, in a park, and in the evening.

Hello there,
………. A park is not only a park.

Last night, I went to Ilan-City-Park to play table-tennis (It is called pin-pong in Taiwan), It is about 6 minutes driving from my home, I usually go there triple a week to play table-tennis of an hour each time. It is totally free to all people.

There are many sports facilities in the Ilan-City-Park (27 hectares), such as: swimming pool, gym, croquet and many others, Most of them are totally free, or, cheap.

The most convenience to public is its open time; people can use them in the evening with light. Table-tennis is opened till 23:00 pm; gym, basketball and tennis are closed at 21:00 pm.

A park usually means an area with few or no buildings set aside for public use for recreational. If, a park could be set a couple of facilities for sports, it would be more useful to public. A park is no more the park only.

Table-tennis, Basketball, and Tennis.

Ilan City Sports Park

Best wishes.

Packaging ...

Hello friends,

Here come some tropical news from here.

Christmas is just around the corner. I’m over the moon because some of my relatives are coming to my villa. I’m moving in few days. I’m just packaging up.
My son’s friend gave us two little dogs so cute: Pucca and Garu. It’s been always my son’s dream to have a dog but living in an apartment doesn’t help. Now he has two. Guess how exciting is that for him. He's marvelled at moving to there. He's got some friends and feels free like a bird riding his bike there with his friends or climbing trees. That is childhood.

Igor, Murilo and Iago

Now that the villa is almost ready, I'm looking forward to put a little money by every month so that I can put up another house near the sea in a place that's been always my dream to live there. Maybe I'll show a picture of the land one day. You would love the view! But it will be part of the next new year resolutions list.

Speaking of new year resolutions and replying to Mahjabeen , Mariana, other friends and bloggers, It’s really been part of my new year resolutions list to do a course next year. As always, I do things step by step. I wasn’t allowed to do the course I wanted to start this year because we are overloaded at the company. So that I’m going to sit for a public contest in another state in Brazil where I want in order to do the course (for second time). The first one was cancelled hours before the beggining( the same saga of being unlucky in tests or something like that). The saving grace was that we made good friends there and we all ended at the shopping celebrating the frustrating day.

Changing the subject, I’m planning to give you a recipe of “pamonha” and “papa” if I have time before moving in. It’s so delicious and nutritious made of corn. Here is a picture of my snack. The purple stuff inside the cup isn’t wine but grape juice. There’s slice of melon and the other stuff is papa.

I have a picture of one of the worst places affected by the floods in my city. I bet you have never heard about this tragedy in my city because it's a poorer area. That's the reason, I've sent donations not only to Santa Catarina state but to my own city too.

Friends, any second now I'm going to work. This a lunch break.
Cheers
Adriana

Film premier

Hello friends!

It is well-known that British people like talking about the weather – that is probably because the weather in the UK is so changeable. I was quite disappointed that I have never experienced rainy and foggy weather that people are always talking about during my visits in England. “Just be patient, Mum!”- Csilla told me – "all in good time". Yeah, right! One day we woke up, looked out of the window and Csilla said: "Oh, it is foul weather today!” Yes, the entire day was cloudy with outbreaks of rain and drizzle.

In London there is a wide range of activities that you can do. But what to do if you are alone and the weather is bad.
Cinema!!! I bought a cinema ticket but I still had some time to kill before the film. I sat in a tea house and ordered a big cup of tea and watched the people through the window. I enjoy sitting and watching the world go by, or people watching. Then I watched the film, Mamma Mia at the Odeon cinema in Leicester Square. The screening was with English subtitles so it was no problem to understand it. Have you seen this movie? Did you enjoy it? I did.

After the movie I wanted to go to the toy shop Hamleys but a big crowd caught my eye in front of another cinema called Empire also in Leicester Square. I stopped and stood gaping at the film premier of Madagascar Escape 2 Africa. I saw - Ben Stiller, Chris Rock and Jada Pinkett-Smith, who lent their voices to the characters in the film and some other celebrities- football and tennis players with their families etc. As soon as they appeared, reporters crowded round, the flash were lighting wildly. Wow! As I had never experienced such a thing before it was a unique afternoon for me. I took some pictures but some of them are not the best quality as I stood in the middle of a large group of people in the rain and I was not well prepared.

If you are interested, you might take a peek at better photos here. I am standing under the umbrella with red and white stripes.

London is a fantastic city. And I still have not written to you about the days I spent with Csilla, which really was the icing on the cake.

Dear all commentators, blogmates! Thank you so much for spending your spare time writing to me. Your comments are great and I will answer all of them. Please, keep commenting. It encourages me to keep writing. Thanks.

I will write soon, and I look forward to hearing from you soon too. Good night! Take care,

Anita

Have you ever been asked: How many pieces of toilet paper do you use after poo-poo?

Hello there,

I had a poo-poo this afternoon in my office building, and I used (?) pieces of toilet paper after that.
It reminded me of one thing that my dorm-mate inquired me a weird question 32 years ago:” How many pieces of toilet paper do you use after defecation?

52 years ago, I landed in a city named Ilan from an unknown place, grew up and finished high school in the Ilan city where it was/is a small town of 96123 populations and 2940 kilometer square. After 19 years, I went to a big city to study in university, and lived in a room of the university dorm with 3 others who were from a big city. As a rustic boy like me, I used one or two pieces of toilet paper to clean my ass after poo-poo. My dorm-mates who were the city-boy who used more than 5 pieces of toilet paper to clean their asses had noticed that and they all together asked me:” James, how many pieces of toilet paper do you use?” I didn’t say a word at that moment because I had no idea of the true meaning of their question.
A month later, I could not help to ask one of them, he told me:” we were curious that you could use only one or two pieces of toilet paper to clean up your ass after a poo-poo?!!”

Times has changed, someday, yes, some day, for the reason of Earth-Protect, people will ask each other:” How many pieces of toilet paper do you use after defecation?”

Allow me to present you 3 photos which are:
a sitting toilet (office, with rolling style of the toilet paper);
a sitting toilet (home, with tissue style of the toilet paper);
a squat toilet (office, with rolling style of the toilet paper)

Are you happy after a poo-poo?

Best wishes.

Eid ul Azha

Hello Everyone!

Eid Mubarak!

As promised, I'm writing to you all about Eid ul Azha. In Pakistan, we celebrated Eid ul Azha/ Baqar Eid on 9th December. This Eid falls on the 10th day of the month of Dhul Hajja which is the 12th month of the lunar Islamic calender. At this eid people sacrifice animals, only if they can afford to buy one to do so, as a symbol of Prophet Ibrahim's (pbuh) sacrifice. The meat is then distributed among people, it could be relatives, friends and on top of that, needy and poor people are given first priority. Eid ul Azha occurs the day after the pilgrimage (Hajj) to the holy city of Makkah which is the 9th of Dhul Hajja. Here's a picture to share with you all of the place where all the pilgrims perform hajj. The stone in the middle is called Ca'aba. Ca'aba is an Arabic word which means cuboid.

Hope you liked the pictures. Your questions are most welcome if you like to know more about Eil ul Azha or the traditions related to it.

God bless you all

Lucia Day

Hello friends,

The calendar shows December 13th - it is Lucia Day or Luca Day.

First of all, I would like to wish a Happy Lucia Day to Lucy who we all know, to Stephen Keeler’s daughter. Dear Lucy! Have you song the traditional Swedish Lucia song to your father yet? Have you received the small Lucia gift from your father today? I hope so. My Christmas cacti are blooming. I am attaching a photo for you all, especially for all Lucy.

There are also certain beliefs associated with Luca Day in Slovakia and Hungary that I would like to share with you.

This day, people start to do weather forecast for the next year. People write down that what the weather is like every day from13th to 24th December. These 12 days symbolize the 12 months of next year. For example, the weather is mild, without rain today, so in January we will expect similar weather – January without hard frost and snow. My mother-in-law also writes notes about weather so it is still an alive custom here.

Another belief that my late grandmother told me is that it was forbidden to sew on this day because Luca would punish that by sewing up the hens so they could no longer lay any eggs. It is a funny old world, isn’t it?

The day of Luca people used to start the process of making the Luca Chair. It looked like a stool – a seat without any support for the back or arms. The stool had to be made of nine different kinds of wood and had to be made slowly, every day a bit right up to Christmas. There is a saying: “Készül, mint Luca széke.” that I will try to translate: It is getting done slowly like Luca’s chair. It was believed that who stood on this chair during Midnight Mass could see if there was a witch present in the church. But after that the chair had to be thrown into the fire because the owner of the Luca Chair would be torn apart by the witches.
Do you like these beliefs, customs? Tell me, what your favourite Christmas tradition is.

Well, I just wanted to drop you a quick note to stay in touch and familiarise you with Luca day’s beliefs. Now I should go serve lunch. I will answer your comments soon. Have a wonderful weekend! Take care,

Anita

English Test : Cambridge ESOL vs TOEFL

Hello there,

At 8:20 in this morning, with my family, I drove an hour to Taipei, my elder daughter Kelly attended TOEFL. TOEFL is abbreviated from Test Of English as a Foreign Language, which is most common requirement for U.S. university admission. The test fee of TOEFL is US$150, very expensive to Taiwanese. It is equivalent to 3 day-wages of Taiwanese.

There are many kinds of English test in Taiwan, which are:
1.TOEFL: America system. Fee = US$150
2.Cambridge ESOL ( KET/PET/FCE/CAE/CPE): British system,
FCE fee=US$100 (Approximately)
3.TOEIC (Test Of English for International Communication): International use.
Fee= US$50 (Approximately)
4.GEPT: made in Taiwan. Fee = average US$50(Approximately)
5.FLPT: made in Taiwan, Fee= US$58(Approximately)

We need to go to Taipei to attend TOEFL, the test started at 9:30 am today, till 14:00 pm. there was only 10 minutes break in the middle time, the examinees had their lunch after 14:00 pm (Taiwanese usually have lunch between 12:00- 13:00).

During the TOEFL test, 9:30 am till 14:00 pm, we (my wife Wendy, my daughter Kitty, and I) had a 4.5 hours Taipei trip. Taipei is the capital of Taiwan, 271.7997 km², 2,622,933 populations. Nowadays, smoking is restricted more and more, therefore, it is very hard to find a trash can on the street which is attached with an ashtray box, I today found one on the Taipei street. Let me show you a photo of it.

( trash can + ashtray box)

Best wishes.

Cat-Cow stretch at home on Sunday December 14th.

Hello there,

Today is a raining Sunday in Ilan City. I stayed at home to do some Cat-Cow stretch Yoga, and to have a chinwag with you, readers, commentators, teachers, BBCLE team, and blogger mates. On weekend, there are less blog entries there; perhaps, you can excuse me to write little longer words.

It’s 15:00 pm in the afternoon in Taiwan; it is 7:00 am in the morning in London as well. Some of you are sleeping; some of you are awake or working now. The most important thing I know is all of you are alive.

too slow? or, too fast?

1. 4:00 am in Mogi das Cruzes, São Paulo state, Brazil.
Ana Paula Lima, you are a diligent English learner who is treated with respect by me. May you have a nice dream.

2. 4:00 am in Capixaba, Espirito Santo state, Brazil
Adiana Helena, You have got a new nice villa and will sleep there in the near future, have a nice dream! See you around after dawn.

3. 12:00 at noon in Karachi, Pakistan.
Naheed Shoukat Ali, Thanks for your correction for my mistook of using the word “invest”,
Yu are so right that I should use “investigate cases “instead of “invest cases”. You are about going to lunch, Have a nice day.
Mahjabeen Tahir, thank you very much for your comments, I learnt a lot from you. May you have a good lunch.

4. From 9:00 am to 19:00 in Russia.
Alexander, I am glad you are interested in BBCLE blog and would like to watch closely for all blogs, thank you. Russia has 11 time zones, from GMT+2 to GMT+12. Dario (from Russia), thanks for your comment.

5. 4:00 am in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Cristina Tarzibachi, you told me:” In Argentina, people call A lawyer and an accountant as the title of Dr, and they are not getting along well because of the accountant has a law-study background which the lawyer considers it is shallow.” We don’t have such kind of problem here.

6. 7:00 am in London
Hello BBCLE team, good morning, I am glad to here that BBC Learning English had joint second at online Educa, congrats. A few days ago, the Taiwan biggest newspaper UDN (United Daily News) reported that BBCLE has provided a couple of stuff on UDN-study website for Taiwanese readers use. I read their website; there are 4 parts which are “Takes away English”, “Quizzes”. “Real English”, and “On the town”.

7. 8:00 am in Germany.
Carmen Radeck, once upon a time, there was a BBCLE student blogger who is German named Marvin, and who blogged only 5 entries of a month, and quitted in the middle of September 2008. Hello Carmen, would you like to be a BBCLE Student blogger someday?

There are no rooms for me to chat with many other commentators today, and I would like to thank you all, and hopefully you could be a student blogger to tell more about you. And I would like to thank Blogger mates and teachers as well, see you around.

For now.

Best wishes.

Christmas Is Coming!

Hello everyone!

I hope you´re enjoying your Sunday :-).

Well, I´ve just realised that everything around is related to Christmas now. I haven´t decorated my tree yet. I know shame on me. I guess is time to do it. Anyway, how do you feel about Christmas? Do you like it or do you think it´s a sad day?
I think the celebration has changed over the years at least hear in Brazil. People are more concernd about what kind of present they will get and the food they will have to prepare than share with their beloved ones and celebrate the hope that´s renewed in every Christmas.
However, it´s impossible to be indifferent to the city lively lights and decoration.

Xmas tree at Ibirapuera Park

Ibirapuera Park´s Fountain.

Paulista Avenue.

Helen has listed the favourite Christmas songs here. I´ve never tought about mine. Hmm... maybe White Christmas, although here is summer time and the weather is basically stuffy, cloudy and wet during this period of the year...

By the way friends, thanks for all your comments. I´m so happy when I read all of them :-).

Jo! Ooh I hope I did well in my exam. But I can tell that all the learning process was very rewarding and joyful. My teacher is so happy because we did the test that she even gave to me and my friend a little present :-).

Anita, we call this cactus May Flower. I´ve watched Mamma Mia but I didn´t like. Actually, I´m not fond of musicals but I love Abba. It was because of their songs that I went to see the film.

James, you´re such a inventive fellow! :-)

Naheed the pictures are great!

Toni, have you ever tried chamomile tea after you go to sleep? It´s so relaxing.

Liz! It´s so nice to see your comments here again :-).

Daria, maybe we can find out more pleasent similarities between our countries :-).

MJ, Paper 5 is the speaking part in FCE exam. It has around 14 minutes of duration. Right now I´m reading a book that Carmen has recommended to me called Last Night At The Lobster, by Stewart O´Nan. It´s about the last shift at a restaurant. Meawhile, we´re introduced to the peculiar characters of this novel.

Adri! Pamonha is so delicious! I´m looking forward to reading your recipe :-).

See ya soon,

Ana Paula.

FAMILY PARTY, RELATIVE RELANTIONSHIPS, AND SO ON

Last week, Oscar and I attended my aunt’s 80th Birthday. It was overwhelming. Not only was the party very well organized regarding the food and the entertainment, but it was very emotional as well.

Why? Well, I had the opportunity to meet some cousins that I hadn’t seen for almost 20 years, so to speak.
What is very amazing is that they haven’t changed at all. You know, I have a big family from my father’s side and it’s quite difficult to see each other as often as we’d like to.

However, I’m always in touch with Claudia and Celia (my 2 cousins who are more sisters than cousins to me). Actually it was Celia’s mother’s Birthday (my aunt Nelly) and I have to admit that she took care of every detail of the party. You did a great job Celia! We all enjoyed it and had a good time.

FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: CELIA, I AND CLAUDIA

I also have 2 godsons. One of them is Juan Pablo (the one that I brought up, you may remember him from my April Blog) and the other one is Pablo (Celia’s son).

Here is a picture of Pablo (Celia’s son) taken at the party.

There was Arabian music too and we all dance (I don’t know if you remember that I have Arabian roots).
Unfortunately, these are the only 2 pictures I have so far. If Celia sends me more I’ll upload them to you.

Friends, I love all of your comments both from the commentator side and the student blog. I don’t have time to answer to you now, sorry, but I read them all and appreciate it very much.

Hope you have a wonderful week. Mine will be a hectic one.

Much love,

Cris

Trivia

Hello there,

Today was a cloudy day, the highest temperature in the daytime was about 18 °C.(64 °F), comparing with the 1st December of 24°C (75°F), it is colder.

December, since I learnt English, it is a code word of Christmas. During this month, the English learner has to speak almost every thing about X’mas in English, to do something for the occasion. But, it’s really hard for Taiwanese like me to learn such a Christmas thing which we don’t have them in our regular life.

Tonight, at home, I got a feeling to check the word “December”, and found an interesting thing on Wikipedia. I quoted it as below to share with you:
In Latin, decem means "ten". December was also the tenth month in the Roman calendar until a monthless winter period was divided between January and February.

Many teacher bloggers and student bloggers have talked about Christmas and posted many splendid photos of X’mas. I could read and see the Christmas scene of many places, it’s awesome. On the contrary, I can hardly remember those English vocabularies which you talked about Christmas. And teacher Jo’s homework of Sunday, 07 December 2008, I had no idea of them at all, now Jo has told us the answers which are Tinsel, Christmas stocking, votive candle, baubles, fairy lights. No matter what I has felt about Christmas, anyhow, it has brought me joy.

People are either rich or poor, they all have a life to live, and they could do something for the Christmas occasion. There is an X’mas tree which was set in front of a small supermarket in my city Ilan, it is small and rough. I shot it and post it as below to compare with your gorgeous photos of Christmas trees.

Merry X

Best wishes & Merry X'mas..
James Wu (Wu Zhih Cheng), Taiwan.

Santa has a sense of humor

Hi everyone, I wrote to Santa and told that you guys have been very good over the year, and in particularly I mentioned that Chris from Argentina had done so marvelously all year round. Santa promised to reward you.

Santa was very amused to know how diligently James has been doing his yoga practice. I bet Naheed did not realize beforehand that James would get himself so involved with yoga.

As I have already mentioned, we are living the dark period in Finland (kaamos). In Lapland there is no daylight at all. Here in Oulu, where I live, we have some light for about 3 – 4 hours daily (from 9.00 – 13.45).

HYOSHIL, Marianna and Anita thank you for your comments. I was so pleased to hear Ana Paula did so well with her studies. I want to wish you and everyone, who may be reading this a very Happy Christmas time.

Christmas is a time to relax and gather strength for the on coming year, so let us all have some time for ourselves over the festivity season. The time is a very important religious festival here in Finland, as Easter time is too, just as you Chris mentioned on your blog some time ago.

Take care where ever you are, and remember Santa thinks of you. Merry Christmas!

What did I learn from an X'mas e-card?

Hello there,

I received an X'mas greeting card from IAP by email. “IAP” is the abbreviation of “International Association of Prosecutors”. The IAP is the only worldwide organization of prosecutors. It was established in 1995. Their headquarters is in Hague, Netherlands. IAP hold Annual Conference every year in different city of the world. 2008 was in Singaorpore, and 2009 will be in Kiiv,Ukraine from 6 - 10 September 2009. Each member can visit different cities of the world each year by participating the Annual Conference..

Initially, I didn’t pay much attention to it because I thought it was done for X’mas occasion. However I got a second thought that it is the first time they emailed a Christmas e-card to all their members. I took a look at it again, and I found that they printed the greeting in 7 different languages which are below (They are also my greeting to you.):
……………With Best wishes for Christmas and the New Year (English)
………………Prettige Kerstdagen en Gelukkig Nieuw Jaar (Dutch)
..................Meilleurs Voeux pour la Nouvelle Année (French)
…………….. Feliz Navidad y Próspero Año Nuevo (Spanish)
…………… Frohe Weihnacheten und ein Gutes Neues Jahr. (German)
... Pozdrevlyayu s prazdnikom Rozhdestva i s Novim Godom (Russian)
……………….Kung his Hsin Nien bing Chu Shen Tan. (Chinese)

I recognized 3 of 7 which are English (1st), German (5th), and Chinese (7th).The last one is not Chinese character but Chinese phonetics. The phonetics sounds strange, but I am ok with it. I also checked up which language it is, and put the answers in the brackets, please correct me if I am wrong. Thank you.

The world is dominated by the computer, and the computer is dominated by English. Therefore, the world is dominated by English. For example, I cannot show any Chinese character on the BBCLE student blog.

I would like to show you the X’mas greeting card with Chinese (phonetics). Well, ...the Chinese will somehow find a way someday.

Best wishes.
James Wu (Wu Zhih Cheng), Taiwan.

Darkness does not mean hibernation

Alessandro, you asked what people do when it is dark. Well, we just perform as we would normally do. Naturally lack of light does have an effect, and we do miss the sun, that is for sure.

But in the other hand the darkness does make you turn some what inwards, that is to say, we do read and contemplate more than we would in the summer time. As I have lived in Finland most of the time; I am not able to explain it better. All and all we just go about with our lives as normal as possible.

Have a good kaamos!

It is getting done slowly like Luca’s chair...

Responses and some new information…

Dear friends,

I appreciate all your comments and I want to thank you for reading my entries. Thank you so much for your kind words about my writings. The comments of my past three entries that I received repaid my effort. It was worth the time that I spent on them. I do not like to admit it, but writing this blog… it is still getting done slowly like Luca’s chair. Please, do not think that I just sit in front of the PC and I write, write, write… No, no definitely not. However, it is not as a hard work to express myself, to express my feelings in English as it was two years ago. Yes, I like writing in English… it is true. When I write or think in English the grammar rules, the tenses, the articles, the right word order are on my mind. You should see my desk when I write –it is in a mess: all my English grammar books, workbooks, dictionaries are open, and my notes are all over the room. Oh, Marianna I do not think that my entries are comparable with teachers’ entries. However, I would lie if I said that I do not love your positive feedback with all my heart. I do not know whether all my prepositions are correct as we are not receiving any feedback from our teachers now. What is more, I am a little sad that neither Lewis Davies nor Stephen Keeler have caught up with us yet. We are just hoping that they will join us.

Ana Paula! I am glad you are back and relaxed. The pictures are beautiful. I agree with you that nowadays lots of people think that Christmas has lost all meaning… it is just greed. I also think that instead of going crazy buying expensive gifts for everyone we should have a social family gathering, have a good meal and a good chat.
It is my daughter who wants to go to South America and yes, Brazil is one of her destinations. Unfortunately I do not have any sisters, I have two brothers.

Bia, My daughter is 21 years old. At the age of 16 she went to the USA where she studied in her third year of high school as an exchange student, which she really enjoyed. After she arrived from the USA she took her final exams in Slovakia. This experience helped her to apply to go to university in England. She graduated with a first –class degree in psychology from the University of Reading, UK in June 2008. She is living and working in London now, trying to save as much money as possible because her future plan is to travel and work as a teacher in South America before pursuing for her Master’s degree. She has recently taken a training course to be an EFL teacher. At the moment it looks like that the first destination will be Ecuador, then Peru, Argentina and Brazil. But things can change very quickly with her. I have attached a photo of my daughter, son and me taken in the garden of her university before the graduation ceremony in June 2008.

Marianna! Thank you for your concern about having a good health insurance. Csilla will have protection against diseases too. My feelings are the same so I just can repeat that I have written to Guzin that as a mother I am concerned about her, her safety, her choices and the consequences of those choices. But this journey sounds a great adventure and an opportunity to see more of the world, to become clearer on who she is and what she wants out of life. I still believe in the saying: fortune favours the brave.

Hyoshil, I am glad you like following my path of what I have done since January, and vice versa. I also like reading your stories about your lovely son, William – do I remember his name correctly? Only 8 more sleeps until Christmas!!! – and we will be filled with joy sitting at the table. Thank you for all your comments. Do not worry about sewing on Luca day.

Filippo! Thank you for your wishes. I am sorry that my English lesson is over. You know, it was the only possibility to speak to someone in English.

Daria, everybody in the office was as busy as a bee. When I left the office at about half past 5 on Friday afternoon everybody was sitting in front of the PC and working hard.

Jeronimo, Christmas is such a joyful time of year. I wish you a Merry Christmas.

Tiasha, yes, I can say that I turned a dream into reality when I met the lovely people at the BBC. I am also green with envy that you can spend these days with your lovely daughters. My daughter is not coming home for Christmas because she has to stay at work. So, we will spend Christmas time hanging on the internet and being together through the ether…again.

Cris, I am wishing you lots of sweet dreams-come-true! It is my husband and son who put up and decorate our Christmas tree in our living room on Christmas Eve while I am usually cooking in the kitchen. They decorate it with a special kind of sweets (szaloncukor- in Hungarian, salonky- in Slovak) and with many other decorations and lights. We always take the decorations down on January 6th. I have attached a photo of szaloncukor

Liz, you know, mums are like that… always speaking and they are not able to keep their mouths shut. But you should appreciate these special moments with your mum, I think. My mother passed away 7 years ago and I miss her very much. It is even harder around Christmas time.

Toni, My family does not like spending time at the beach and sunbathing when we are on holiday, so we hired a car for 5 days and drove a lot when were in Barcelona. We drove to Figueres, Girona where Salvador Dali was born and we saw the Dali museum. We stood in line at least for 3 hours because there was a mass of people who wanted to see the museum, too. The exhibition was very interesting and exciting. We spent one day in the Güell Park that Gaudi designed and built. The park was wonderful. Then we went to Monserat, a mountain outside of Barcelona. There was a marvellous view over the mountains and environs. In Barcelona we walked up and down the famous streets, called Las Ramblas. We saw the Picasso Museum, the musical fountain, the Olympic stadium and the Sagrada Familia. We all went to the top of that high building on foot. We thought, if we are in Spain we must see the bull fight so we went to a bullring. But it was a bad decision because my daughter cried during the show as she felt sorry for the bulls. It was horrible. Any other suggestion…

Hania, thank you. I wish you all the best, too. I do not really know when the right time to wish a Happy Christmas is. I believe, we can wish it at any time around Christmas season. All good wishes for Christmas to everyone.

James, it would be fabulous to meet all teacher and student bloggers, commentators in London one day. What a nice dream! I had my camera with me every day in London, of course. However, I am not a good photographer and I hate posing for photos. No, I do not take the camera with me at home. I come from a teeny-weeny village that has a population of about 650. If you are all interested I can write more about it later. No, I have not seen a Luca chair and I do not have any photos of it, unfortunately. I think, nowadays nobody makes Luca chair. What a pity!

Karoon and Mahjabeen, nice to meet both of you. Thank you for your kind words. Best wishes for your families too. I will continue my report about my experience in London soon. I have some nice pictures to share with you.

Pary! Thank you for the link. I have looked at it. Your cheeky monkey is so cute and your baby is absolutely beautiful. You must be proud of them. Oh, Pary, children grow up so quickly … enjoy every moment with them. I know, a baby can be so demanding and being parent is a giant responsibility. But on the other hand it is full of joy and happiness.

OK, friends, I think and responded to all your comments. Oh, it took a while. Have a nice day! Take care,

Anita

A chicken leg, is it too much?

Topic:
Hello there,

Today is a cloudy and fine day, I took a day leave to do a health examine in a hospital. It lasted 4 hours form 8:00 am to 12:00 pm. It cost around $277.77 GBP (pound) that is paid by the Government.

The health-examine is now popular in Taiwan, and it has popped up to become a hot business. Do you know how hot is the health-examine in Taiwan? It could be a tour itinerary, The tourists come to Taiwan to do only one thing that is Health-Examine. There was an advertisement stated: “Healthy live is better than ill long live.” People do care their health nowadays. Nevertheless, there is another point of view:” People are more afraid of dying than ever”.

A public servant or someone says a public officer, has a yearly welfare to do a health-examine that the Government offers, the amount of money is at least $69.289 GBP (pound) that it depends on the ranking. It is welfare though, to my colleague, two-thirds escaped from Health examine. In my opinion, people are often timid to face their bodily collapse.

There was nutritional course in today’s program; a nutritionist asked me about what did I usually eat for 3 meals daily? I told her all the details, including what in it that a lunch box I ate is? She said: “Mr. Wu, it’s too many of you to eat such a big chicken leg for a lunch? Too much meat, three small slices of meat could be enough”. Wow..... what can I say that?

Let me show you a photo of the chicken leg which I ate for lunch.

Merry Christmas, Chicken leg.

Best wishes, and healthy live.

Winter Vacations

Hello Everyone!

Just like Jo, I too would say that it's great to be back in touch with you all. Thank you Jo! Along with my career in accountancy I would love to become a good yoga teacher 'cause I love yoga. My students are all teachers as I'm working in a college as a yoga instructor. The idea behind this fitness programme for teachers is of the management. When my students come up and share the benefits they are getting from yoga practices, it really pleases me. Saturday will be the last working day so there's one more day to go then it will be winter vacations and so shall be mine. Winter vacations are only observed in schools and colleges and they are of 10 days. The classes begin on the first day of January. Do you have winter vacations in your countries?

Speaking of vacations, I have always loved them dearly:-).

Helen , Hyoshil and James, you had asked me some questions related to Eid ul Azha. I will start by telling about what kind of animals are sacrificed. Well, the answer is all the domestic animals such as cow, goat, sheep, camel. Speaking of traditions, alongside sacrificing animals people perform hajj. Which reminds me, Jo you asked me if I hope to go on hajj one day? I would love to go there and along with that I would like to visit all the historical places surrounding that area. Okay, one more answer is to be given. The black Stone (it was reportedly originally white in color) was sent down from the heavens to the earth by Allah, along with the first man on earth, Prophet Adam (a.s.). Then, centuries later, when Allah commanded Prophet Ibrahim (a.s.) and Prophet Ismail (a.s.) to rebuild the Kaabah, the Stone was placed in the corner of the Kaabah, as directed by Allah to Prophet Ibrahim (a.s.). Kaabah represents the direction to pray. Hope I have answered to your questions according to your expectations.

Finally, I'm having a go at Jo's phrase 'in for a penny, in for a pound'. If something is worth doing we go the whole way and take all the risks not just some. I was very sleepy when I started writing this post but I said to my self 'in for a penny, in for a pound' and wrote it.

See you all soon,

Naheed

A theater in Taiwan.

Hello there,

I went to a theater with my family in the evening; the name of the move is “The day the earth stood still”. It is an English speaking movie along with Chinese subtitle. A ticket of one adult is $ 5.05 GBP (pound). It took me 5 minutes from home by car.

The movie industry in Taiwan has recessed a lot in the past decade; almost no movie which is Taiwanese or Chinese speaking movie has been produced. We have no choice to see English speaking movie. And there are no other languages except English that we could choose.
Speaking of Chinese speaking movie, it always has a Chinese subtitle with it; we used to watch a Chinese speaking move along with a Chinese subtitle. For the sake of it, once I tried to see an English speaking movie which is usually without subtitle, I totally lost and got no idea about what the story of the movie is?

Regarding the subtitle, All Taiwan TV show except a live one has a Chinese subtitle with it. I used to watch TV with subtitle since I was little, consequently, I couldn’t understand a little bit of it while I watched English speaking TV show at the first beginning. Even now, the progress is still limited.

The following photo is the inside of the theater that I had been this evening. The theater located in the 7th floor of a medium department in Ilan city, and it has 4 different cells for 4 different movies. Its open time is from 1:30 pm (1st) to 9:30 pm (last one) on weekday, if you watch the one that begins from 9:30 pm, 2 hours movie for example, you’ll leave there at 11:30 pm. On weekend, it opens from 9:30 am to 11:30 pm (go home at midnight).

The day the earth stood still...CHANGE

Best wishes, and healthy live.

What is your image of a police?

Hello there,
It is a sunny day, the temperature in the daytime was 20 °c(68°f), perfect time to be out.

I went to a police station to investigate a burglar case in the afternoon. There were at least two policemen on duty at the station as usual; a armed one was sitting at the front desk to secure the station and to take care of every things that come to the station, s/he have to stay in the station , and another uniformed unarmed policeman was sitting at his desk waiting an abrupt assignment. They take turns for 8 hours, 24 hours a day, and 7 days a week.

Ilan County doesn’t have many policewomen, if a police is a female; she in Taiwan is a treasure. There will be a report on local news in a couple of months that it stated:” A beautiful policewoman is in an X police station on duty…….” As I have observed the policewomen in Taiwan are all very beautiful, that is according to the report by the press.

Taiwan people have a lukewarm relationship with the police. They want them sometime and hate them somewhile. For example, people like the police to secure the society while they hate to get a traffic fine from a police.

There are around 100 staffs in Ilan prosecutors’ office, including 18 prosecutors, 5 drivers and 8 Government cars. The prosecutor could apply to use a Government car for business, that was the way I went to the police station this afternoon.

The photo below is the government car which I took today that parked in front of a small police station.

We are the good citizen.

Best wishes, and be good.

Gardens and parks in and around London

Hello friends,

How are you? I hope that everything is going well for you.

Before continuing my report about my experience in London, I would like to write some lines to my dear friends.

Hi Naheed! The students’ winter holiday begins on Saturday, 20th December 08 and lasts until 12th January 09 in Slovakia. It means that students have a three-week holiday. You can imagine how happy my son is!!! Three weeks… without early wake- ups, enjoying the freedom of vacation – playing computer games, going out with friends and last but not least Christmas. Oh, the sweet smell of student’s years… Anyway, I am wondering whether the teachers make good students. I am sure you will make a go as a yoga teacher. Good luck and enjoy your vacation!

Cris, thank you for the link. I have showed it to Csilla, as well. It is really kind of you to offer to be her guide in Argentina. Thank you. It is always good to know that there are such kind-hearted people like you.

Anna, I think you have found the best place to improve your English skills. I have been visiting this site since June 2006. I do not exaggerate if I say that the great majority of my English knowledge comes from here.

Bia, good luck with your IELTS exams. My daughter also took it in 2005 before applying to go to university in England. I wish you a successful future as an interpreter.

Mahjabeen, wow! I did not know that my name is common in Pakistan. It is interesting. Anita is the pet form of Spanish Ana, made from Ana plus Juanita, meaning: favour, grace. It was not a problem to order a cuppa or buy tickets in England. However, I tried to overcome my embarrassment when I spoke in English as speaking is far far more difficult than writing for me but I think I managed it quite well. We should ask Carrie whether she understood me. In English there is a sentence “What's the magic word? “ - said to a child who has not said 'please' when asking for something. I tend to say that the magic words are “please and slowly” when I talk to someone in English. Thanks for reading my blog and commenting on it.

Hania, it is my pleasure.

James, I think you are right; I try to be diligent about my work. I believe that the opportunity to blog here is really special and I want to make use of it. Unfortunately, I could not send my entry yesterday because I was busy. I do not think that one chicken leg is too much for lunch for an adult person. Oooh! My son manages to eat two or three pieces of chicken legs.

Toni, I am glad to hear that bullfighting shows are forbidden in Barcelona. That is good news. I tried sangria but have not tasted the Spanish cured ham (mountain ham) and paella yet. A reason for me to go back to Spain! Yippee! I told you the other day that I come from a small village where people grow healthy vegetables and fruit for their own use. Almost every person keeps some animals. Some raise pigs, poultry or rabbits others keep dogs and cats only. Some people have a true traditional pig-feast 2 or 3 times a year. They invite relatives or friends to help with the work and then they spend many hours together eating and drinking. People prepare cured ham here too. The method of preparing it is more or less same as in Spain. The biggest difference is in the lengths of smoking and we do not use air drying like you in the mountains. Boiled ham is a typical meal eaten at Easter here. Just imagine, my pen friend from Spain has sent turrón to me for Christmas so I can try it too.

Ok, getting back to gardens and parks in and around London. Well, Csilla and I visited Kew Gardens in southwest London one day. We went there on the Underground. I am always amazed how easily Londoners can travel and reach the destinations where they want to go. Anyway, so the gardens were marvellous. We spent the entire day there but we could not visit everything as the garden is extremely large. I think that people should visit this garden in every season because it could be so different in spring, summer, autumn and winter, for example we were not able to look at the blooming rhododendron or the herb garden, to name but a few. What I liked the best was the new treetop walkway which is 18 m high and 200 m long and takes visitors into the tree canopy. However, the leaves had all fallen so we could not see any birds sitting in their nests. What a pity! Anyway, I enjoyed this tour dearly. I have attached a couple of photos for you.

One afternoon, when Csilla finished her work earlier we went to Hyde Park to see what Winter Wonderland was. Csilla said: “even David Beckham takes his children to Winter Wonderland when they come home”, so we thought it was something to see. Well, it is a fair; it is London's most spectacular winter attraction with rides, German Market, Ice Rink, Giant Wheel, restaurants, cafes, and bars. The park looked very festive with its coloured lights and atmospheric Christmas songs. The weather was quite cold that afternoon so we tried Pimm’s winter which is a truly delicious winter warmer. Yummy! It was a lovely afternoon.

An other day we did a little sightseeing by a double-decker and went to Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park where we visited the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain. These parks are beautiful. Just take a look at the pictures

I also went to Covent Garden which is not a garden with trees and grass. It is a market and there are so many interesting things to look at. I saw a street performer in front of the Market that was really interesting. Do you see him?

Of course, there are many others parks in London but I wanted to show you the ones I visited during my last trip.

I do hope you like these pictures and today’s entry as well. I enjoyed reading your comments, as always. I am looking forward to hearing from you. Take care,

Anita

Celestial images

Hello Everyone!

I hope you are all keeping well. The weather has got a little cold as the Karachites recieved the second showers of rain of the winter season on Thursday and Friday. Before I proceed further, I would like to say thank you for taking your time to send your nice omments.

Hello Anita, what pleases me most about you is a bond between you and your daughter. You seem to be your dughter's best friend:-). I make a lovely picture in my mind when you tell us about your family and the love and care you have for them. Best wishes to you, touch wood:-)

Hi Marianna, you are so lovely. You know I have taken some more photos of my pigeons for you. It's always good to see your comments 'cause when you write to us all, seems like it straight away comes from your heart. Today I'm sharing some shots of the full moon which I'm going to tell you all about after a couple of replies.

Hey up James, your posts are like a guide to Taiwan. I'm sure all those who have itchy feet are surely going to visit Taiwan very soon.

Hello Cheikh Vall, hummm...your question is very interesting indeed! Well, before partition, both India and Pakistan were one and were under the British rule and they wanted to be free from them as independent states. So it was the people who wanted to emerge as free states on the globe.

Thank you Fillipo and Beatriz for your cmments! I have a question to you both about the summer vacations in your countries. Over here, we have summer vacations around three months. They start from the mid of May and last till 31st July.

So let's get down to celestial images. Well, you might remember that just a week ago the world saw the biggest full moon of the year 2008. It is said that this kind of full moon occurs once in 15 years. I too took a couple of photos which I'm sharing with you all.

There's another photo which was taken around the same time. In this shot you will see a star just below the moon and it's a very unusual shot.

I would like you to share a word or two about your experiences of the full moon in your countries.

Time to hit the sack,

Naheed

Weekend

Hello there,

Today is weekend; I spent most of time to read lots of the BBCLE stuff and to write my entry. Generally speaking, it took me 2 hours to write an entry every day, excluding reading and searching and thinking. As a saying:” No pain, no gain.” I got a lot.

Weekend is the end of the week, especially the period from Friday evening through Sunday evening, or, Saturday and Sunday for short. Taiwanese culture, we don’t have such thing to combine Saturday and Sunday as a word “weekend”, and we reckon that Saturday is the 6th day of a week, and Sunday is the rest day of a week, that these two days in which most paid workers do not work.

Oppositely, the workweek varies from nation to nation; Taiwan is from Monday to Friday. As I surfed on the internet, the legal workweek in Muslim-majority is either Saturday through Wednesday, Saturday through Thursday, or Sunday through Thursday. That is to say, Friday would be a rest day. For Israelis, the workweek begins on Sunday and ends on Thursday or Friday at noon.

To an unemployed person, the definition of the workweek is every day.

Anita (Slovakia) asked me:”How much the minimum wage per month is in Taiwan?” It is $900EUR. Incidentally, the exchange rate has been up and down lately,
2008/9/1: $1 EUR =& 46.12 NT (new Taiwan dollar)
2008/11/20: $1 EUR =& 41.57 NT (new Taiwan dollar)
2008/12/20: $1 EUR =& 46.20 NT (new Taiwan dollar)

Toni (Spain) has commented a lot, including Student Bloggers and Teacher bloggers, I am very impressed. He found me through BBCLE Facebook group and told me he had applied a BBCLE student blogger on September or October, and failed to it. He said he will try it again, that is a good new to hear, Go! Go! Toni.

In addition, I would like to thanks Alexander (Russia), Bia(Algeria),Daria(Russia),Hyoshil(from UK),Marianna(Slovakia),Pary(Iran),Alvaro(Spain),Renata(Romania),Paco(Spain), Mahjabeen(Pakistan),Thienloi(Vietnam),Fillippo(Italy), Antonio Kayamba(Congo), Hania Ahwazi(Iran), Anaatasia(from London),Anwar(Morocco), Tanya(Russia),Beatriz(Uruguay), Beatriz(Uruguay), Lizeth(Argentina) , who commented on my entries.

Let me show you a photo that people in Taiwan take Kong-Fu as a morning exercise.

Kong-Fu

Best wishes, and be healthy.

Hello Everybody!

How are you doing? I guess you´re all busy with the preparations to Christmas.

Oh I´m sorry. I couldn´t blog these days because I had a very busy week. Half of the employees in the company that I work got the sack this month. This situation is the result of the international crises that we´re facing nowadays. The ones that last, including me, had to work hard to keep up with their routines. Now the company activities are stopped and we are all on holidays for 20 days.

Anyway, it´s 9:14 pm and my sister and my mum are outside putting fairy ligths on the pomogranate tree. It drizzled in the very beginning of the evening and now the night is very fresh. I´ve just decorated our Christmas tree. I think it needs more baubels. Here is a picture:

My Xmas tree

Ewa, thanks for telling me about your lovely Christmas Eve. I hope one day you could come to Brazil and enjoy the our hot weather :-).

James, I loved the picture that show people doing Kong-Fu moviments. I´m totally fascinated by martial arts.

Naheed, your full moon pictures are stunning :-).

Carmen, I´m enjoying the book very much indeed. It´s a good book for this time of the year :-).

Anita, I got itchy feet when I saw your pictures. They are beautiful as usual.

Adri, are you already in the villa? I hope we can talk soon :-).

Oh my sister is caling me. I guess she wants some help with the fairy lights.

Talk to you all soon,

Ana Paula.

The shortest day

When writing my blog this morning, the sun has not risen yet. Today is the shortest day of the year as far as the day light goes. It is 10.20 am at the moment and the light outside is grey blue, which means that the day will open in any minute.

Today here in Oulu the lightness starts at 10.30 and a Polar night will close in again about 2 pm. Talking about Polar night, James in Taiwan seems to be very knowledgeable about very many issues, he untangled the word kaamos (Polar night). During the kaamos time it is difficult to tell is it daybreak or dusk James.

Toni through global weather changes the winter temperatures vary a lot now days. The winters have become warmer than they used to be. It used to be very common to have temperatures –20 – 35 minus Celsius, but for example now it is only +1 C. Rapid changes are murder as far as driving a car, one minute the roads are wet and the next they are frozen. Snow on the roads in no problems, but black ice is. We Finns needed you warm hug from Spain Toni.

And Alessandro I do envy your weather as I love the sun and warmth. This is one reason why we go as often as possibly abroad. I am learning Greek at the moment as we are planning to take our holiday this spring in Greece, where the light in my opinion is so gorgeous. I will include a photo that was taken in Grete last time we went there. The man in the photo is my husband Pekka.

Filippo you are exactly right saying that when we go out during kaamos it is dark and when we return from work it is dark, so we do not see the sun at all. It can be depressing.

Nice to meet you Karoun from Iran, yes my name is Arabic one, but it is also used here in Finland. About the darkness; as the title in my blog says, today is the shortest day. That comforts us Finns a lot, as the days are now getting longer. Already in early February we will notice a big difference, yes it is over a month away.

Ana Paula I was not surprised that many people had been laid off work in your country, the turbulence in the global economy is affecting us all.

And lastly, it is possible that this is my last blog now, I am very busy at work, I still have some Christmas preperations to do and also I must continue with my Greek studies in earnest. So farewell all my global friends, above mentioned and Naheed, Chris, Anita, Marianne and others...

P.S. The sun did not show up, instead it started snowing and it is very overcast.

Joy and good cheer for Christmas from your mate Leila in Finland

P.P.S. Best to Beatriz, Adriana and Hyoshil and BBC LE and who ever might be reading this, peace to everyone!

Reading the local newspaper.

Hello there,

Today is Sunday, December 21, 2008, the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. I stayed at home to read.

While I read a piece of news on the Taiwan local newspaper that said:” There are 3 undersea cables broken at December 19 2008, GMT 8:00 am .According BBC news ….. “, I surfed on the internet immediately to find out what the English speaking press said. And I found a BBC news report , quoted it a little bit as the following:
1. Internet and phone communications between Europe, the Middle East, and Asia have been seriously disrupted after submarine cables were severed.
2. For this to happen twice in one year, on the same cable, is a serious cause for concern.

It’s weird, because my internet connection has not been affected at all. Then, I reread my local newspaper, and found that there was a map on the newspaper which indicated that Taiwan is a spot of the pacific submarine cable connection. It reminded me that the spot of the submarine cable in Taiwan is in Ilan County in which is my hometown. Carry on it, I found an old piece of news which is a notable event of the submarine cable broken:”The 2006 Hengchun earthquake on December 26, 2006 rendered numerous cables near Taiwan inoperable. “

After the above procedure, I started to write the blog entry of this one. That is one of my ways to write. As you can tell that I read a lot before writing, and I also gained a lot by reading, that is for sure.

It is winter solstice today; Taiwanese families traditionally eat pink and white Tanyuan, symbolizing family unity and perfection. The following photo is the Tanyuan that I ate today after dinner in the evening.

Tangyuan

Best wishes, and be healthy.

James Wu (Wu Zhih Cheng), Taiwan

PS: What I meant above the words”undersea cable / submarine cable”, its official term is “optical submarine telecommunications cable.

THE DAYS BEFORE CHRISTMAS

Hi everybody,

How are you all? I’ve just had a very nice talk with A.Paula, Naheed and Carmen on Skype.
It’s amazing to think that I’m more in contact with all of you than my friends who live next to me.

I want to thank you for all of your comments; it’s always very rewarding to receive them.

Well, today is Sunday and it’s raining in Buenos Aires. Yesterday it was very hot (33º C) and there was not a single cloud in the sky. Thank God we have many sunny days in Buenos Aires and the weather is predictable most of the time.

Yesterday Oscar and I went to do the Christmas shopping. The shopping malls were full of people and we tried to buy all very quickly. Both of us hate crowds.

I took some pictures for you. This is a shopping mall not very far from my flat.

Then we went to Belgrano neighbourhood. Since it was very hot we had a big ice cream while we walked along the streets. The shops windows were all decorated with Christmas items.
I especially love a street called “Sucre St”. They put a red carpet on the pavement and assembled a tree at the corner of the street.

Here is a picture of a shop where my mum used to buy all the decorations for our tree when I was a child. It’s located in a Gallery. Yesterday I went there and remembered those nostalgic times.

By the way, where are you going on Christmas Eve, my friends?

Oscar and I will go to my mum’s house along with my mother in law and my sister. On New Year’s Eve they will all come to my house. I’ll take some pictures at my mum’s so that you can see all of them.

Before finishing this blog I want to say MERRY CHRISTMAS to the BBC staff, all the teachers, all my blog mates and all the commentators.

Hope you have a wonderful time. May Peace and love be with all of you.

Hugs and kisses to you.

Much love,
Cris

The icing on the cake

Going to the theatre…

Hello friends,

I love theatre. However, I am not a theatregoer…unfortunately. Let me explain why not. As I told you I live in a teeny-weeny village and it has pros and cons. One of the disadvantages is that villages do not offer a wide choice of cultural events. When we want to see a theatre performance we must travel to one of the bigger towns, Komarno, Bratislava or Budapest in Hungary.

Csilla has seen several plays and musicals since she moved to London and I was listening enviously to her when she told me how wonderful they were. My lovely daughter had a big surprise for me… she took me to the theatre in London. But before telling you what I saw I would like to tell you what we did from dawn to dusk that day.

At last, Csilla had a day off on Monday and it was our “big “day. After having breakfast Csilla prepared sandwiches for us. It was a special feeling…the boot is on the other foot… because mums tend to prepare sandwiches for their children and not the other way round. She performs her duties very skilfully, so all that really put my mind at rest.
Firstly we went to Madame Tussauds which is a famous wax museum in London. We had a whale of a time there. The wax models were so lifelike that you almost felt you could talk to them.

Then we went to Hamleys in Regent Street which is a toy shop that has seven floors. I loved this shop; I think I could spend a whole day there just trying all toys. Doing Christmas shopping there was really easy.

We set out for our ride on the London Eye at sunset. The panoramic view from the top of it was breathtaking. Many famous landmarks were visible in night lights, including the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben.

We finished the day with a fantastic theatre performance. Csilla took me to the Dominion Theatre and we watched the musical by Queen and Ben Elton, We Will Rock You. I did not understand every word, of course, mainly when the actors played on words but I got the plot, I think. I loved the music. So it was superb. The audience applauded for about ten minutes on foot. I was really surprised that the theatre played to a near full house on Monday evening. That’s London!

Well, my journey to London was… I can hardly find the appropriate word… fantastic!!! Many thanks Csilla!
I do hope that I did not make you bored by sharing my experiences.

My dear friends! How is life treating you?
It is always lovely to get your letters and to hear about what is happening in your life.

Beatriz, Filippo, thank you for your comments.

Naheed! There was so much cloud; we could not see anything so I really enjoyed the photos. Thanks.

Leila! Best of luck with your Greek studies! All good wishes for Christmas!

James, thanks for the answer.

Ana Paula! Glad to hear that you are on holiday, so enjoy it!

Cris, it is so interesting and unusual to see Christmas pictures of people who are wearing short-sleeved or sleeveless blouses and T-shirts.

Tiasha! Thank you for your kind words and wishes. Best wishes for your family too :-) I think that it is important to provide opportunities four our children to try things, but then to respect their choices about what they like and what they do not like. Csilla has always had a very definite sense of herself. Even when she was very little she knew exactly what she liked and what she did not. That is ´real life´- we, parents must let go our children to live their ´real lives´. Do you agree with me?

My very best wishes to everybody! Take care!

Anita

Merry Christmas...

Hi to all..

When the BBC team has mailed me asking to blog, I thought of blogging regularly. But, as I'm in my final year of engineering, I've been quite busy these days. Moreover, I've also gone to my village and stayed there for about 10 days. I hope I can blog regularly in the last days of December.

First and foremost thing that I'd do now is to reply to comments.

@Christina from China: Tina.. actually I'm not doing any job right now. I've just got selected as an associate software engineer in an MNC. I'd join in it in about 6 months after completing my final year. Thanks a lot for the wishes, anyway. It's been so nice to see you again.

@Marianna from Slovakia: You are right. Satya means The Truth.I'll surely write about what has changed during this year. Well.. yeah.. I still want to be a writer. Writing is my passion... Btw.. do you feel proud in having Satya friend? I have never expected that...

@Filippo from Italy: Thanks for dropping in your valuable comment. I'm really happy for you too..

@ Leila from Finland: Lol... An intriguing comment too... I wish I could write some feel-good articles. And, how can I say I'm Okay? I actually don't know whether I'm okay or not. It's you people who should decide.. :)

@Naheed from Pakistan: Naheed shoukat Ali has sent you a message on twitter.. I've replied to your message on twitter and I've been waiting for your reply... . Do read it and comment... Have a good day.... P.S: I like Yoga very much though I don't find time to practice it.

Some of you have asked me what I've been doing all this year. Read my blog for my reply...
Click on Thoughts Aloud .. Don't forget to comment...

That's all for today...

Party Time!

Hello friends,

My English classes has just finished and in order to celebrate Christmas and one more year of studies my school organised a tea party. Gabriela and Antonieta ( the school owners) make the environment there very cozy and friendly which helped a lot in my FCE preparation.
Well, in the party some students sang and so our teachers. However, what we eagerly waited the whole evening was Anto impersonation of Amy Whinehouse.
Do you think she looks like Amy?

Here´s my teacher Gabi with one of her students performing Take A Bow by Rihanna:

And here´s a picture of me, Lucienne, who did the FCE preparation with me and our teacher Gabi:

Friends it´s always a pleasure to read your comments. I hope you aren´t so stressed out because of the Christmas preparations :-).

Cris asked where we´re going to spend our Christmas Eve. I´m going to spend at home with my mum and sisters. On the Christmas day I´m going to have lunch with my granny, aunts and cousins.

Anita, your blogs never bored me. On the contrary, they open a door to a world that want to know more and more. I really admire you. You always find time to write us and improve your impeccable English.

Leila, Merry Christmas for you and your family. I hope you can write us before the end of the month.

Hi Hyoshil! Thank you very much for the book recommendation. I found the plot very interesting. A big kiss to you and your cute son :-).

Hey Fillipo! Nice to know you have also decorated your tree. By the way, could you tell what tidbits is? I´ve never heard about it. Merry Christmas to you and your family.

Oh James, thank very much. You´re very kind. But I can tell you that it takes some time to write my blogs because I have to consult grammar books and dictionaries. In addition to it, I´m a terrible typewriter. I type very slowly... :-)

My dear friends, BBC LE staff, teachers and blogmates, I wish to all of you a magic Christmas full of blessings and hopes. May the Chistmas light warm your hearts and souls.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!

Ana Paula,
xxxx

Give me liberty or give me death

Hello there,
………………………………… I have been to jail many times ……………………..

On my way to office this noon, the thermometer of my car read it was 15° C (° 59F) outside. It was colder than 24° C (° 75F) December 1st. In a cold winter day, the best idea is to enjoy a hot spring.

I took turns to Ilan County jail in the afternoon, the prosecutor in Taiwan has to go to the jail for a inspect visit regularly.

I learn a saying long time ago:” Give me liberty, or give me death.” Reportedly, it was from a speech by Mr. Patrick Henry, it is a simple and strong, and a notable word to pursue the freedom. Everybody can say it loudly, and suddenly, a thought came to my mind while I was being the jail this afternoon, that was:” Does a prison could say GIVE ME LIBERTY, OR GIVE ME DEATH in the jail? Does it make sense?” I have no idea of it. And why I had such kind of thought, I don’t know either; maybe, it is because I read and wrote a load of English stuff this month, no matter where I go, English will attach onto my body.

I visited a factory of the jail; they showed me a number of handiworks which were made by the female prisoner. I of course took a shoot and post it as below. The cute figures are for sale, and the prisoner who made them could get the pay.

(The left one is an eating figure)
(The right one is a smoking figure who is exhaling the smoke)

Two cute figures, hope you like it.

A nature gift----- Hot Spring

Hello there,
…….. The most wonderful thing in the winter is to enjoy hot spring.

Today is a little chill as yesterday, 15° C (° 59F) in the daytime. A word came to my mind which is Hot Spring. For that reason, I took a half day off to enjoy hot spring. It's about a 15 minutes driving from my home.

There is a furlough (on leave/ day off) system for Government servant in Taiwan. It depends on the employed year. You got yearly 1 day off with paycheck after 1 year being employed. 14 days off after 3 years; 21 days off after 6 years; 28 days off after 9 years; 30 days off after 14 years.

I took a half day off in the afternoon to a place named Jiaosi Township to enjoy hot spring. The cheapest one to enjoy hot spring for 40 minutes is EURO$2 while a regular fee is EURO$3. There also have many hot spring parks which are built by the Government to offer a free try of foot-soaking hot spring enjoyment; the tourists who just stop by could have a for their short time stay. I shot a photo of the foot-soaking in the hot spring as the following.

The agriculture has developed quickly in recent year; farmers use the hot spring water to cultivate their plants, there are 2 famous and popular plants which are wild rice(The swollen, crisp white stems of Manchurian wild rice) and water spinach in the hot spring area,

Tourism is blooming in the hot spring area, Hot spring spa is a very common business, and a fish called “Dead Skin Eating Fish” is the hottest one, the Dead-Skin-Eating-Fishes swim in the hot spring water and eat the dead skin of the sole of human feet. The feeling is …..

(The photo: The tourists all enjoy their foot-soaking hot spring try and have a relaxed chinwag with each other,)

foot! feet! foot....

Christmas card

Hi everyone,

I would like to wish a happy holiday season and lots of Christmas surprises to all teacher bloggers, to my blogmates, to all readers and last but not least to all lovely people who write comments. Merry Christmas!

Veselé Vianoce!

Kellemes karácsonyi ünnepeket!

Unfortunately I cannot crochet but my dear late mother crocheted several covers, little bells and angels which I like very much. They are valuable and important to me. They hold some nice sentimental memories for me. They remind me of my Mum.

Take care,

Anita

Life is going on, Time is flying

Hello there,
It is a good day, or it is a bad day, life is surely going on.

To a native English speaker, it’s easy to describe a daily schedule in English. Nevertheless, on the contrary, to me who am an English learner, it is easier to live a usual life than to speak out or to write down in English. I try my best to write it down as below, please correct me if I have done a wrong sentence or misuse words, and all that.

(1) In the morning: working time is from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm
I ate breakfast at 7:30 am after I brushed my teeth and washed my face, and went to by 12 minutes driving.

(2) Noon break: from 12:00 pm to 13:00 pm
Back home to have lunch and a break. When I finished lunch, I had a question in my mind:” How many people are eating lunch like me at this moment?”

(3) In the afternoon: working time is from 13:30 pm to 17:30 pm
Back to my office, took care of tons of businesses.

(4) In the evening:
I ate dinner at 18:30 then took a shower and thought:” What time of every day is the usual time for people to have a shower?” Most people in Taiwan take their shower/bath before going on bed. The reason for that is to keep the bed clean. As I realize, many westerners take a shower/bath in the morning, and I have heard the reason is “It is more polite to meet people with a clean body.”
I am peacefully writing my blog at home in the Christmas Eve. Taiwan is not a Christian Nation, however, the church, the Christian, the catholic, metropolitan youths, and English teaching school would have a celebration and have a fun of it, while most of Taiwanese are enjoy a peaceful time at home. I am murmuring:” Time flies, life is going on, I am getting one year older …tempus fugit… tempus fugit…….time flees”.

I would like to welcome two new commentators who are Rajesh Shrestha (from currently Sweden, originally Nepal) and Binoy Kumar (from India); your brilliant comments made me peace in the Christmas Eve.

Merry Christmas

Best wishes,

DECEMBER 25th: CHRISTMAS DAY

Merry Christmas to you all!

How did you spend this special Day?

As I told you before, we went to my mum’s yesterday night. When we arrived, there were a lot of presents surrounded the little Christmas tree my mother had put up.

My mother had prepared all the meal. Let me tell you……..

As a starter she made this special salad.

Then, for the main course, she cooked stuffed chicken ……

……accompanied with potatoes in orange sauce.

For dessert we had some ice cream and…………………..

…for the toast she arranged a tray with nuts, turrones, pan dulce (sweet bread with raisins and dried fruits. In Italy they call it Pannettone), dried fruits, snacks and so on.

Then of course we had a toast and took a picture for all of you.

After done this, we opened all the presents. I gave them the 2009 BBC Calendar and they really loved it, especially because my recipe was included there. Then, we exchanged some other gifts. We left around 2 am.

Hope everybody had a happy Christmas surrounded by their loved ones.

I’m curious about your celebrations. What did you do?

Filippo, I like the way you celebrate Christmas. This is a religious celebration and sometimes we forget its real meaning.

A.Paula, it seems that we are the only ones here that have a summer Christmas Day.

Esteban, of course you also had a Summer Christmas Day. Did you see many fireworks along your street? In my mum’s neighbourhood we didn’t see much. It was a bit quiet.

James, thank you for your kind wishes. I love your blogs.

Hyoshil, I’m happy to see you here. You are a faithful commentator. Thank you for reading my blogs.

Naheed, you know, this year is so special to me because I got to know so wonderful people like you. A special thanks to BBC LE staff for that.

Carmen and Anita, for me is also strange to see people with heavy clothes on Christmas. It’s a pleasure for me to take photos for all of you.

Pary, what a special year for you! Your new born son brought more happiness to you. God bless you and your lovely family.

Now we have started counting down the days before New Year.

Best wishes,

Cris

It is a must.

Hello there,
….. ….. ….. To learn from a variety of cultures is a must

Today is the nativity of Jesus. As I leant that Jesus’ actual birthday may not be at December 25, it could be chose by Rome to match with their festivals or with the winter solstice. People in Taiwan got to work today.

I wrote my daily routine yesterday, and read many interesting things through the comments.

Cristina (from Buenos Aires, Argentina) said she brushes her teeth after having breakfast, while I thought that brush teeth before breakfast is nature and right, it was an amazing thing to me to hear that. I never thought that it could be healthier after eating than before it. Incidentally, I brush teeth twice a day which are after getting up in the morning and before going on bed at night.

Cristina said that she has lunch with a sandwich prepared by her. It is a healthier way of life. The condition of being urbanized in 2 decades in Taiwan, Eating-Out habit for lunch is more common than ever. However, due to economic recession this year, people like better to have lunch prepared by them. It can save money, and it is healthier as well.

Cristina has dinner at 21:00, and I have dinner at 18:30, it’s quite different. If I eat dinner at 21:00, I would be starving around 18:30 unless I have a Tea-time in the afternoon.
Which it means that the Tea-time is not certainly suitable to every country,

Cristina has almost 5 hours at home before dinner; it is a good arrangement for an office lady to take care of both work and family,

Merry Christmas

Ahmed (from United Arab Emirates) said that there is no holiday today in UAE, but they also celebrate Christmas. The UAE is an Islam; I am impressed by their Christmas celebration.
Happy New Year

Best wishes,
James Wu (Wu Zhih Cheng), Taiwan

December 26

I have never written something like a diary in my whole life. After reading James Wu's entry, I thought of writing about my routine. So, here's what all I've done today...

December 26, 2008

This is probably the most unexciting day in my life.

11.00 AM : I got up so late today. I've slept at 3.00 AM yesterday ( or should I call it today?). I've slept in my friend's room. I was still feeling sleepy even after getting up.
12.30 AM: I went to my room and had bath.
1.30 AM : I had my lunch in the same old restaurent.
2.30 AM: I slept again and dont know when I started blogging and it is 4.40 now..

By the way, today is not a holiday. I've just bunked my classes..

____Satya...
Life is creative...

Christmas Greetings!!!!

Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas day my dear friends. It makes my mouth water when I look at Cris's pictrues of delicious food. Cris, your mum really made it all with true heart and the presentation is fantastic. It seems like as if it's a table of a restaurent, Mashallah!

Do you all know something, that in Pakistan, we do have a holiday on 25th December. Well, the founder of Pakistan was also born on this day so on the account of that we have a day off. And of course, our Christnain bretherans have a special very celebration on this day:-).

As a Christmas present and a symbol of love and peace I would like to post the pictures of my pigeons.

Marianna, I hope you will love to paint these shots on your canvas. Along with that, Thank you everyone for your lovely comments:-)

Best wishes,

Naheed

Even it is a trivia, it could be the gold

Hello there,

Renata (from Romania) said: “The most people from Romania are Christians so we celebrate Christmas every year three days.” So I reckon, in most 2C’s (Cathedral and Christian) Nation, it is still a holiday today. I wonder if there is/are someone on duty of BBCLE team. If the answer is negative, all comments would stay a little longer somewhere in the computer, that because the comments by readers would be checked by BBCLE team before it is published.

It

Satya (India) said he had bath after getting up at 11:00 am, it means that he take a bath after getting up, while Taiwanese almost take a shower before going on bed. Satya used the word “bath” instead of “shower” which means he immersed his body in a tube. The word “bath” reminds me of an experience of my English learning, As a beginner, I didn’t realize there is a difference between both and shower, the first word I learnt of washing my body daily is “bath” which the school text book stated and my junior high school teacher taught, I used the word “bath” to describe my daily trivia many and many times, until one day, someone asked me:“Do you have a bath or a shower every day? “I totally confused and embarrassed at that moment, because I didn’t know the meaning of the word “shower”. And the friend asked me:” Do you put your body into a tube?” I said:” No, I don’t.” He said:” Ok, I got it.” I was still bewildered until I checked the dictionary. In Chinese, we don’t distinguish bath and shower in oral speaking. Henceforward, as a non-native speaker of English, I always remind myself the culture difference for fear of speaking something wrong.

Cris (Argentina) said she brushes her teeth 4 times a day, a quick wash after getting up, and 3 other brushing after 3 meals a day. And she has 2 tea time a day, one at work around 15:30 and the other at home around 17:00. I got a question in my mind: “As a dentist like Andri (a student blogger from Brazil), how many times a day does she brush her teeth? And why is that? “

Reading the life trivia from different culture has widened my eyes. So I say:” Trivia could be the gold.”

Best wishes,
James Wu (Wu Zhih Cheng), Taiwan

Understanding the Difference...

I'm in urge of writing today. I don't want this day to be an unexciting one. So, I just wanna at least write something ( which can be the only useful thing I can do right now). I updated my personal blog yesterday and this is my 2nd post here today.

I, actually, did not know the difference between the word bath and shower. Thanks James for the information. I should have used the word 'shower' in my previous article. For that matter, I have never had a bath in my life. These are, normally, the problems faced by non-native English speakers. I still face problems with certain words and tenses. And I'm happy for that. Because, only then, we don't stop learning the language.

Naheed... I love your pigeons. They are cool. People say that there might be a war between India and Pakistan. I hope there wont be any such thing.. Why do humans fight? One say 'jihad' and other say ' war' ... God.. give us peace...

Okay.. It's time to sleep...
See you soon... au revoir..

A resume on the internet

Nice to meet you.
Hello there,

It is near the end of December, my privilege of blogging on the BBCLE student blog is going to the end. At the precious moment, I would like to share my experience of English learning on BBCLE website.

Back to April, 2007. I emailed an application to BBCLE for a student blogger. I got a phone call from BBCLE Paul (London) at the last third part of April; it was an international call to my cellphone (mobile), only a short conversation, Paul told me that he will email me the Student blogger stuff, and I got it. After that, I wrote entries on the student blog of May 2007. A reader whose name is Toni from Spain told me that he applies for a student blogger on September or October, and haven’t got a reply, he will try another one. I have no idea about how do they choose a BBCLE student blogger? However, I do see one thing in these 2 years that a few student bloggers somehow quitted in the middle way of their month blogging. It would surely trouble the BBCLE team, the teacher blogger and the readers.

As Blogger.com says:” A blog is a personal diary. A collaborative space. A political soapbox. A breaking-news outlet. A collection of links. Your own private thoughts. Memos to the world.” At the very beginning, I thought it would be easy to write a personal diary every day, But, things didn’t come to the way that I had thought. It was easy to write daily entries in the first week. Afterwards, the stuff which I could write became fewer gradually. In the meantime, to write and rectify my articles, to read comments, to search information, and to read teacher blogger’s entries, I was exhausted. It liked I crashed a wall. Luckily, a motivation of blogging on the website kept me going on. I was not born in a rich family that could have a chance to go abroad to learn English in a totally English environment. And, hiring an English native speaker tutor to correct my English writing is not so easy and expensive and not a necessary cost. Now I got a chance from BBCLE that an English native speaker would like to correct my writing for free, it is impossible for me to give up the chance? That is my motivation. The motivation drove me to write an everyday entry. The motivation drove me to read Teacher’s entries carefully. Every time I found teacher Alex corrected my mistakes, I was always bliss out. In for a penny, in for a pound. Finally, I had done my wish of blogging every day. No pain, no gain. I know what I should go for it. My English got much better improved. I know the direction of upgrading my English. I know many countries through the readers’ comment, because I usually check the data of a country where a commentator is from.

This year, I joined the BBCLE group on Facebook, I met a few BBCLE student blogger like Ana Paula ( April, 2007), Naheed(June, 2007), Adriana( September, 2007), Critina(April, 2008), and a commentator (Pary), and other friends. To me, the easiest way to introduce myself to a new friend is:” I am the BBCLE student blogger of May 2007, if you would like to know me better, you can read my blog, and the website is as below. ),” It is to say that I have a trusted resume/CV on the internet which is posted on the BBCLE student blog.

Best wishes,

Objectivism and Me...

What an abstract title is it! I've started reading English novels when I was in class X ( 16 years old). But no author has ever been able to impress me with his ideas except Ayn Rand. I started reading Rand's "Fountainhead" by a random choice. I did not know about her before reading Fountainhead. But, I was surprised with the ideas of objectivism in that book and then I googled about her. Her stories are not great but the characterization of the Protagonist is splendid. With simple and crispy words, she conveys powerful ideas.
But, does her novels really had an impact on me? My answer can neither be yes nor be no. Because, I believed in Objectivism even before I know the term, though I don't fully agree to Rand's Objectivism.
Ayn Rand says:
" The moral purpose of my life is my happiness".
I believe it so much. I've just written a few lines about the above line in my blog.
But, I should agree to the fact that Ayn Rand has influenced my style of writing. By the way, I started reading "Atlas Shrugged".

And now, It's the time for the replies to the comments:

@Marianna from Slovakia: Whenever I write a post, I expect your comment and I've never got disappointed. You are such a lovely reader I ever had. Thank you so much.
@James Wu( Wu ZHih Cheng) from Taiwan: James, It's been so difficult to pronounce your name in the brackets, especially the middle name. You are so active here. I really appreciate it. Hoping for more posts from you in the coming days.
@Shravan from Hyderabad,India: Hi, shravan. There's only one answer to your question. Practice. That's all. Start writing... whatever it is. And the best way to do it is to start a blog. It really gives lot of inspiration to write because whatever you write will be read by many people. So, start blogging... have a great day...

See you soon...

Christmas tree

Hello friends,

I do hope you are all well after eating and drinking during Christmas holidays.

At last, I can show you our Christmas tree. As I said before we bring the Christmas tree into the house only on 24th December. My son and my husband decorated it while I was cooking in the kitchen. Under the tree we put not only the presents but fresh sweet bread - brioche, fruit, seeds (beans, pear, poppy seeds, corn etc), garlic, onion, money and Nativity scene of Bethlehem and a bell. Christmas food has magic meaning: poppy-seed and peas bring abundance, honey makes life sweet, garlic and onion bring health, and apple means beauty and love.

Traditionally no meat is eaten on Christmas Eve. So we had thick lentil soup with garlic scones for lunch and fish with potatoes, poppy seed cake, called beigli for dinner. Every food that we eat at Christmas symbolizes abundance. Lentil, poppy seed and scales of fish are like a lot of small coins.

When the tree was ready and the gifts were put under it we lit all 4 candles on our Advent wreath and I rung the bell to announce that Little Jesus had come and we opened our presents. Then we listened to the new CDs, chatted, watched movies and enjoyed each other’s company. That is what Christmas is for… I think. We talked with Csilla on Skype.

On 25th and 26th December we visited relatives and I entertained my father for lunch. We had meat soup, roast duck, fried chicken, mashed potatoes and salad. Sorry, I do not have any photos because I was so tired of all the cooking that I had no energy to take any photos. What typical menu did you have at Christmas?

I have attached a picture of Christmas wafer which is eaten with honey, a slice of my husband’s birthday cheese cake and cookies that I prepared.

At Christmas we eat so-called Christmas beans (I think its English name is broad bean or field bean) - that are easy to prepare. Soak the beans overnight- they get much bigger. Rinse the soaked beans and put them in a pot of cold water. Bring to boil, add salt and simmer covered for 2-3 hours until beans are tender. Once the beans are ready drain them. You can add salt if it is necessary and enjoy.

Dear friends, I owe you the responses for your comments. Thank you all so much for your notes and kind wishes.

Mauricio, I do hope that one day you can visit all parks in London. I wish it for my bottom of my heart. Thank you for your kind words. Keep commenting.

Hyoshil, thank you for your wishes. I was glad to read that your son received the certificate of merit. I think, it is the best thing for mothers when their children are rewarded for their outstanding achievement. Congratulations. How was your Christmas? Would you mind if I ask you whether you speak to William in Korean? My elder brother is married to a Czech woman. They speak only in Czech at home and his children do not speak Hungarian. I am quite sad about this and angry with my brother that he has not taught their children Hungarian yet. What is your opinion?

Karoun, I liked reading about your tradition Yalda. It was really interesting. Thank you. What I liked the best about Yalda is when grandmothers tell children old tales. How lovely. I remember listening to my late grandmothers’ tales and stories about their life when I was a child. I liked those stories so much. Dear Karoun, thanks also for your Christmas wishes even if you are not Christian. I agree with you that the word would be better if people respected each other more.

Anne, it was such a pleasure to learn that you have read my blog entries from 2006 September. I am glad that you are feeling near to me because of children. Please, tell me more about you and your family.

Marianna, I like reading your comments sent not only to me but to other bloggers as well. I was laughing loudly when I read your idea of me as a model again. Although I know that you are just kidding, I am sorry to tell you that I am absolutely not a type of a model. I think I am too shy and I am not photogenic at all. Sorry, if I have disappointed you.

Filippo, I hope you will have the chance to travel to London soon. Do not miss going to the theatre.

Renata, glad to read your comment on my entry again. Thanks for the kind wishes.

Hania, I am glad you liked the photos. Hope you can visit these places too and experience all the beauty of London.

James, you got it. I wrote Merry Christmas in Slovak and in Hungarian too. It made me happy that I could write and show you something new as a parent. Anyway, I really admire you for your daily writings. I like reading them.

Cris, thanks for your kind comments. Wow! What mouth watering dishes. However, the potatoes in orange sauce sound a little unusual for me as we rarely eat sweet and salty things together. Anyway, I liked the photos. You all look very happy in it. I spent three mornings in the kitchen and I was so tired of all cooking. My mum used to entertain us for Christmas lunch. Since she is not with us I am the one who invite my father. I am sure, Cris you also value these days with your mum. Am I right?

Naheed, thanks for the pics of pigeons as a Christmas present.

Satya, c'est la vie. I am of exactly the same opinion as some situations happen in life and we cannot do anything about them.

Ana Paula, where are you? I hope it is all well with you

Well, I have rambled on long enough. Looking forward to hearing from you. Take care,

Anita

Miraculous times in Northern vicinity

Thank you all for you response! Toni, if you become a student blogger, I for certain, will give you my comments. Hyoshil, I am sorry to tell you that I am not able to find Scandinavian witch story books in English for your son to read. Maybe you could ask the Library in U.K?

I am glad I found the time to write once more before the student blog closes. Also I must say that I am pleased that Christmas is behind us for another year, so much hassle!

Nevertheless one more note about Christmas, I am pleased to tell you that Santa in Finland had over 700 000 letters this year from all over the world. It is a lot of letters to answer. As you may know our Santa is 400 years old. Luckily he has a gadget in his possession to slow the time circle; without it he could not visit everyone over the globe.

In my previous blogs I talked about our Polar night. Well many people find the dark fascinating. Over 500 charter flights landed in Lapland in December to witness our winter. In January the figure is estimated to be only about 200 flights, but all and all we are talking about 120 000 visitors mainly from U.K, Russia and Ukraine.

Let us hope the visitors to Finland are able to withes Northern Lights splendor (photos below). We call this miraculous occurrence in Finnish “Revontulet”, but they maybe are known to you as Aurora Borealis. I doubt that you were aware that when seeing the lights up in the night sky, you are able to get them dance wild by whistling. According to old Lappish tale, you must whistle and thump you feet on the ground simultaneously, and hence, you will be rewarded by even more staggering light show.

I hope you find the photos below interesting. With a kind permission of Newspaper Kaleva I am able to share them with you. You may get the picture larger by double clicking your mouse key on right side.

The first picture is taken in Kuusamo, about 200 kilometers from my home town and the other photo has been shot in Tromso, in Norway.

When I see the Northern lights again, I will whistle and think of you!
BBC LE thank you!

Happy New Year from your mate Leila in Finland.

We are globally connected

Hope you're all having a wonderful Sunday:-) Leila, the Northern lights are magnificent and truly miraculous. Talking of this, yesterday I had a talk with Cristina, our very dear blogger from Argentina, on Skype. We talked about how amazing it is to think that we are into different seasons. Over here in Pakistan, we are into the winter while in Argentina, it's summer. If the world system of seaons would be the same everywhere, maybe there would be scarce resources more than we have now and we might not be able to fulfil them. As we all know there are certain crops that only grow in the summer, then there the ones that only grow in the spring, and winter and so on. So there are certain seaons and time to sow the fields with and that's how the world economy works. Speaking of seasons, when people, on one part of the globe, celebrate Christmas and New Year with a lot of warm clothes and winter food and snow falling on their roof tops, at the same time people on the other part celebrate them with putting on light clothes, not so heavy food and a warm weather, and that's interesting isn't it?

It is good to think how globally we are connected to each other and BBC LE blogs are the most easiest way to be connected with you all everytime we log on. I have got to learn a lot from here not only with respect to English but also about the people and places, their cultures, traditions and festivals and so much. I really loved to see the decorations of your Christmas trees and the mouth watering pictures of foods you all prepared for your loved ones. Anita, the beans recipe is very easy and it can make a good everday food too.

With this thought of the day I would like to give a special message to Satya who is from my neighbour country. Satya, just like you and me there are many people in India and Pakistan who are against war so hope for the best nothing will happen. How I wish if everyone realises that we get nothing from war, the only thing we get is destruction and only destruction, tearful eyes, orphans, homeless and the end of happiness on those faces which never thought of such a cruel thing could ever occur.

To Marianna and James: I just read your comments so signed in again to reply to your messages. Marianna, thank you so much for your sincere love and admiration which is more than words to me. Hope you had a wonderful Christmas day. I have one more picture of a pigeon which I have saved for the final day of the open blogs:-).

James, the interesting thing about the pigeons is that I haven't reared them though, but this friedship is old. They look at me standing by the window and start to gather as they know that I have their grains with me. As for their different varieties, you will be surprised that it's just three that I have been able show you all. There many more!

Today and everyday, my wish for everyone one on this globe is peace and prosperity.

Naheed

The comments

Hello there,

December 2008 is my English month, which means I study English hardly during this month.

Today is Sunday; I read BBCLE blog and other English website in the whole evening. And I would like to share a few things with you:
1.My blogger mate, Satyanarayana Reddy, has added me as a friend of Facebook. It means that he read my entry of December 27th , and just a little bit pity that Satya has not add Bbc Learning English as a friend on Facebook. Bbc Learning English has 673 friends on Facebook now.
2.I received a message on Facebook by Güzin Tümer who is a regular reader of BBCLE blog. She said that she read my blog but didn’t comment on my blog. Yes, I know, because she must have read my entry of December 27th that was the way she found me on the Facebook. It explains that the readers are always more large number than the commentators. I am curious about how many readers do BBCLE blogs (Student blog, teacher blog) have? By the way, I did a research that Güzin Tümer did her first comment on Teacher Anne’s entry of 22 May 2008, she said:” I have been reading the writings for roughly ten days………… This is my first comment.”
3.I have read 3 comments by Cris (blogger), Toni (from Spain), and Thienloi (from Vietnam). It implies that BBCLE team has someone on duty during the holiday, and I would like to quote the comment by Thienloi: “I will try my best to improve my English. And I do hope I will be BBC Blogger one day.” Hi Thienloi, I am looking forward to reading your blog on BBCLE.

To a commentator, the most important thing is that her/his comment will show up on the website. Normally, it will be published by BBCLE, unless there are a spam manager problem or somehow. Every time I commented, I often wondered whether BBCLE have received my comment or not? There is not a single message showed on the screen like: “your comment has been received by BBCLE, we’ll published it after reviewing. We publish your comments at least once a day, Monday to Friday. Usually comments will be published the morning after they have been written.”

Secondary, the most benefit of a comment is the English comment corrected by a native English speaker. If there has a simple correction on comment, it would enhance the motivation of the comments, and it profits all the readers, and the kindness and merits are beyond bounds as well. The simple correction is just like:
(Original): I have learnt English since I was 12, quite a long time. But I have not being abroad to learn English.
(Correction): I have been learning English since I was 12, quite a long time, but I have not been abroad to learn English.

(Simple correction--- the italic words are the correction):
I have beenlearntlearning English since I was 12, quite a long time. But I have not beingbeen abroad to learn English.

Does anyone know what the biggest different between USA and UK is? As I know, that is:” US does not have any global public service like BBC Learning English of UK.”

Best wishes,
James Wu (Wu Zhih Cheng), Taiwan
ps: It would be wonderful If there are colorful words on the blog.

I´m Here!

Hi dear friends!

It´s nice to read how you spent your Christmas holiday. Anita, I´m pretty well. Thanks for your kind concern :-)

I also had a wonderful time with my family. On Christmas Eve I stayed at home with my mum and sisters. We´re not used to have a large meal during the evening, because it´s summer time in Brazil and in this period of the year the air is quite stuffy and thunder storms are frequent around here. So our supper had salads and fruits, but I couldn´t resist so I baked a sponge cake for dessert. Hmm... I really love cakes :-). We talked and watched some films too. Anyway, on the Christmas day we went to my granny´s house to have lunch with her and all my aunts and cousins. It´s the only time of the year that we are able to get together and catch up with each other.

The city is very calm due to the fact that many people are going to the beach to spend the New Year´s Eve there. It´s a perfect time to enjoy the city because the places aren´t so crowed and you don´t have to haste to do things.
Yesterday I went to the cinema. The train and subways were so empty. There was silence on the stations, which is a quite rare thing when we talk about public transportation here :-).

Friends, many thanks again for your comments. It´s always wonderful to read them :-).

Hi Fillipo! The tortillini sounds delicious. I´ve googled some images of this dish and there´s this kind of pasta here. I´m going to have a goal soon :-). By the way, have you seen Gomorrah by Matteo Garrone? I´ve watched this film yesterday and I found really interesting. I´m looking for the book now.

Cris, your Christmas table was really beautiful.

Satya, thanks for adding me as a friend on Facebook :-).

James, I reckon you´re the diligent student here. You´re blogging everyday and all your entries are very interesting and informative :-).

Naheed, I loved the pigeons pics :-).

Leila the Northen lights are really amazing. Thank you!

See you soon,

Ana Paula.

A bad writing work, by means of correction, it comes out a great learning material.

Hello there,

There are two open blogs in 2008 which are January and December. The idea of the open blog is an innovation one. In January, there were 9 student bloggers on it; I thought it is better for me not to write much lest my blog entries occupied the space. It was a blooming blog indeed; somehow, I felt a little pity. What is the destination of an open blog up to? Did it reach the aim? Is it an English learner’s blog?

In December, there are 12 student bloggers join the open blog, I decided that I would daily write it, only limited my paragraph and photo. The student blog till now has been blossomy as the last one. Bloggers use more photos than their blog of before, and their English writing skill surely improved a lot. Yes, it’s a contribution of BBCLE. However, a little pity is still lingering in my mind.

Why did BBCLE run an open blog? I have no idea, and BBCLE yet has not said a word either. In my opinion, BBC Learning English offers 2 blogs of student and teacher for improving learner’s writing, and the teacher blog will give the student advice on what they write and suggestions. Normally, the student blogger would make writing mistakes; the teacher blogger could correct them and give them a few advice or suggestion. Through this kind of interaction, the readers can learn English writing by way of student blogger’s writing mistake. Nevertheless, I haven’t got any correction through the open blog, it has been a pity.

A bad writing work, by means of correction, it comes out a great learning material.

Enjoy your learning, and best wishes.

I'm sorry friends

Oh my friends,

Adriana from Brazil here. Sorry but I am still without internet connection at the villa but I haven't forgotten you all a single day.

Here are some pictures from there:

My family and me in black.

And this is where I'm planning to build the next one...

Well...it's the best I can do for now. This time I'm stealing my brother's time in his computer. I'm in my father's home.

I'm missing you. As soon as I solve the problem, I'll participate better.

That's it.

The Pomogranate Tree.

Hi there!

The sky is remarkably blue today and a soft breeze is refreshing this summer afternoon.

It´s said that the infusion of the pomogranate fruits or leaves is an effective remedy for sore throat. My house´s garden always have a space for this tree, which our family, friends and neighbours use when they come down with a sore throat. Apart from that, the tree is really beautiful and the flowers have a delicate orange color, the little seeds inside the fruit are reddish and taste sweet.

Here we have a tradition in the Three Wise Men Eve, in which it´s said that one should suck three seeds of pomogranate saying for each seed the name of one of the Three Wise Men. After that, the seeds should be wrapped in a bill and put inside the wallet. It´s believed that the person who does that will have a prosperous year and won´t suffer from lacking of money.

In addition to it, under the tree´s shade and on its trunk, orchids, carnations and hydrangeas inhabits. It´s a beautiful view, isn´t it?

Well, I bid you farewell now my friends.

See you soon,

Ana Paula.

2008 BALANCED SHEET

Hi my lovely friends,

Well, as a good accountant, I’m trying to make a balance of 2008. I won’t bother you with the profits and looses columns but I want to sum up just the following:

PROFIT: and this is a big profit I have during this year. I became a Student Blogger in April and not only have I improved my English skills but I got to know lots of friends as well.

In addition to this, my list of international friends keep growing since I registered on Facebook and what is really very profitable is the fact that we all learn from each other every day.

Moreover, we also get to know other cultures and customs.

By the way, where will you celebrate New Year’s Eve?

In my case it is my turn now to cook. So my mum, my mother in law and my sister are coming to my place.

WISHES FOR 2009:

I wish with all my heart that those countries which are at war now, stop it and think of how easy and marvellous it would be to be in peace and love forever. Am I asking too much?
Who really benefit from it? Well, I think that all of us have the answer and this is the earth, not Heaven.

SOME REPLIES TO COMMENTS AND BLOGS:

I’m very happy you all liked what my mum cooked.

Toni, I asked my mum about the potatoes in orange sauce and she told me that she prepared them along with the stuffed chicken. She cut the potatoes in slices and placed them in the baking sheet around the chicken. Then she sprinkled the juice of 4 oranges mixed with cognac. Have a try and then tell me.

Nurzhan, your comment is lovely and your level of English is good. Keep practicing and you’ll improve every day as all of us do.

Bahar, thank you for your kind wishes. I’m happy that you made new friends.

Beatriz, it seems that you had a peaceful Christmas. That’s a good way to celebrate it. Enjoy your parents. Seize the day.

Adri, I love your villa. The pictures speak from themselves. You are surrounded by nature and it’s a goal you have achieved this year my friend. You all seem to be very happy.
I wish you the best.

A.Paula, hey I’m happy you appeared. It seems that you took a little vacation of English after your hard exam. I’m glad you had a lovely Christmas among your love ones. See you soon.

James, it seems that you take your English studies very seriously. Take it easy and let it flow. Your English is very good my friend and the way you express yourself is wonderful. I also appreciate the fact that you care a lot about the others.

Naheed, I totally agree with you. We are all connected in this crazy world and make it seem better. Thank you for sharing the pictures of your pigeons. Here in Argentina they are a plague. Everybody complains about the mess they produce. All the buildings, balconies, patios, streets and all the places are dirty because of them. But it seems that yours are very well educated : -)

Leila, your pictures are unbelievable. I haven’t seen something like this on the sky before.

Anita, your dishes look delicious too. Here it’s very common to eat salty things with sweet sauce. For New Year’s Eve I’ll prepare pork stuffed with dried prunes and bacon, then I’ll sprinkle black sugar with mustard caramelizing it. I’ll accompany it with apricots in sweet sauce. By the way, I treasure the moments I spend with my mum and my mother in law, you are right.

Satya, though we don’t know much each other I wish you a Happy New Year.

Esteban, hope you have a wonderful vacation.

HAPPY NEW YEAR FOR ALL OF YOU, THE READERS WHO DON’T LEAVE COMMENTS, THE TEACHERS AND THE BBC LE STAFF!!!!!

See you.
Much love,

Cris

Happy New Year !!!!

Hello Everybody,

All of you are doing great job being a regular blogger. I was lost for many days. Now, I am here again in the blog world in the eve of New Year to wish you all a very happy, peaceful and prosperous new year 2009.

My New Year resolution for this year is to be a regular commentator of the BBC Blog and dedicate myself to improve my English communication skill.

Best Regards
Kiran

Bratislava – the Little Big City

Hello friends,

After telling you about my journey to London, about traditions and beliefs in Slovakia during December and before wishing all the best for the coming year I would like to write about Slovakia’s capital city, Bratislava or Pozsony, as the Hungarians say.

Bratislava is not too big and is not too small… I think it is the reason why the town is called the Little Big City. If you compare Bratislava with the overcrowded neighbouring capital cities- Prague, Vienna and Budapest- you can still have a small town feeling there.

I do not want to tell you facts or numbers because it is so easy to surf on the internet and find links, data and dates about Bratislava or look at here or here if you are interested to learn more. You might remember that I have taken English course in Bratislava and I thought, you might like seeing some photos that I took there at the beginning of December. The British Council Slovakia is situated in the medieval Old Town. I think that this part of Bratislava is one of the most beautiful ones. The Old Town is quite small, but it is packed with historic sights, luxury shops, pubs, cafes, hotels and there is the National Theatre nearby too. Well, here are my pictures:

Rubberneck – he looks happily and calmly out from the sewerage hatch on the corner of two streets

Shöner Náci – waves his cylinder at the passers by. There are still people living in Bratislava who remember the dandy in his tailcoats, who visited the town for several decades and entertained the ordinary people

Paparazzi – as if alive, inquisitively looking around the corner in front of the restaurant of the same name

Old Town Hall – the City Museum is located here, the oldest in Bratislava

St. Michael’s Gate – it is one of the symbols of the town. A tourist attraction beneath St. Michael’s tower is the “zero kilometre” listing the distances of 29 world capitals from Bratislava

Slovak National Theatre – the building is the seat of the Slovak National Theatre opera and ballet ensembles

Of course, there are many others historical buildings and monuments in Bratislava but I wanted to show you the ones I saw on my way to the learning centre of the British Council Slovakia.

Oh, one more thing. We will say “Good Bye Koruna, Welcome Euro!” as Slovakia will adopt the euro on 1st January, becoming the 16th EU country to do. Slovakia will adopt the currency at a rate of 30.1260 SKK/EUR.

The local authorities in Bratislava are promising grand New Year's Eve celebrations in Bratislava and the midnight fireworks will take place by the Danube River.

OK, it is time to leave you. I should go get some things done. I need to make lunch. Looking forward to hearing from you. Take care,

Anita

How eccentric can one get?

As I am at home with fever, I though writing one more short entry and tell you that we Finns can be a bit weird.

The pictures I am sharing with you - as the year 2008 is closing in - were taken last summer, when my husband and I went to see a world champion foot ball competition.

Well, what is so strange about that, you may ask. The fact is that the contest takes place in swamp land here in Northern Finland.

May the good force be with you!

Best wishes from Leila in Finland

What did I learn from a writing correction?

Hello there,

I hit upon a sudden idea a couple days ago, I wrote a shot paragraph and posted on a website to see whether will there be someone to correct my English? And I got a response. I would like to share with you what I learnt from that correction. (I submitted at Dec 30, 2008, 12:11 am, and received a correction at Dec 30, 2008 7:59 AM.)
------------------------------------------------------------
My original writing:

I like to eat many cousins which are delicious. I am not a cooker. Usually, I don't cook either. I can't tell you what are the ingredients used to prepare the meal as well? Every time I read someone writing a recipe in English, my head is bigger and bigger gradually. I like to eat a good meal, however, I hate to learn the English about what are the ingredients of the meal, so many meal's English terms which are hardly to remember and far away from my knowledge. May you have a nice meal today.
------------------------------------------------------------
The correction by Mr. Peter Murrell who I haven’t met:

Good work. I've made some corrections/suggestions for you:
"I like to eat many foods which are delicious but I am not a good cook. I can't tell you what ingredients are used to prepare a meal either! Every time I read a recipe in English, I get more and more confused. I like to eat a good meal however,I hate to learn the English for the ingredients of the meal. So many meal's English terms which are hard to remember and far from my knowledge. May you have a nice meal today."
I wasn't sure what you meant by "I like to eat many cousins" - a cousin is the son or daughter of an aunt of uncle. I changed the word to "foods".
-------------------------------------------------------
(PostScript by James: There are some text color and strikethrough I can’t show them on the BBCLE blog.)

From the above correction, I learnt:

1.I wanted to write “cuisine”, but I wrote “cousin”. It’s really weird and funny.

2.Cook and cooker:
As I learnt before, a person who learns English called learner; A person who blogs called blogger. Therefore, my intuition tells me that a person who cooks called cooker. That’s a mistake I had made. Actually, I looked up a dictionary after I had been corrected as above; a cooker is an appliance for cooking. And a person who prepares food for eating called cook. I got totally wrong with the word “cooker”.

3. The order of a sentence, and the article:
I wrote: “I can't tell you what are the ingredients used to prepare the meal as well?” But the right sentence should be:” I can't tell you what are the ingredients used to prepare the meal as well?” I got wrong with the position of be-verb in a sentence. And I made a mistake of the article, I should use “a” instead of “the”.

4. Extra word:
I wrote:” Every time I read someone writing a recipe in English”, in this sentence, the word “someone writing” is an extra word which means it doesn’t need existing.

5. Chinese English:
If I said “My head becomes bigger and bigger In Chinese, I mean that I am annoyed with something, that I feel my head having ballooned, so I wrote:” my head is bigger and bigger gradually”. while the correction is:” I get more and more confused.” It implies that a native English speaker couldn’t understand the sentence” Head is bigger and bigger.” The sentence could be a Chinese-English.

6. Punctuation mark:
I wrote:” I like to eat a good meal, however, I hate to….” The correction is “like to eat a good meal however, I hate to…” The punctuation mark around “how” is so different.

7. Fragment:
I wrote:”I hate to learn the English about what are the ingredients of the meal”, and the correction is:” I hate to learn the English for the ingredients of the meal.” Comparing these two sentences, it looks like that my sentence fragments into a bit.

8. Adjective & Adverb:
I should use “hard” instead of “hardly”.

9. Phrase:
I should not use “far away from” but “far from”.

I have learnt so much from a correction of a short writing, that why I said on the blog yesterday:” A bad writing work, by means of correction, it comes out a great learning material.”

Thank You

Enjoy your learning, and best wishes.

Time To Bid You Farewell.

Hi dear all!

Today is my last blog, so I´d like to thank you for all the lovely comments that you sent me. I enjoyed very much indeed reading and answering them. I´d like also to thank the BBC LE staff for once more give me the opportunity to catch up with my friends. Moreover, it´s a pleasure to be part of such a wonderful and international English group like this one, and I´m glad to see that each year we´re improving our English knowledge together with the help of our dear teacher bloggers and we´re also making more friends.

Well, I´ve just come to know that some of my cousins will join us tomorrow. One of my neighbours every year let off fireworks, which is a wonderful spectacle for our eyes. Before the fireworks, we´re going to spend the night watching films and eating some snacks. I´m going to prepare some 'pão de queijo' ( cheese bread) and for drinking I´m going to prepare some pineapple and watermelon juice. New Year´s Eve is always celebrate with lots of fruits as it´s quite hot here.

Now let´s chat a bit friends :-):

Hey Filippo! I´m planning on going to SP this weekend to look for Gomorrah. The film it´s quite impressed and good indeed. For sure it´ll receive a nomination for the Oscar. Besides, I read that Roberto Saviano was menaced by the mafia after writing the book. Oooh poor guy! Anyway, have a wonderful 2009 you too!

Thanks Güzin! I´m glad to meet you on Facebook. I hope we can talk more soon.

Oh James, I´m not going to the beach. However, my elder sister is already there and she´s in charge to jump the 7 waves for me :-).

Welcome Ribail!!! I´m glad to know you´re having a ball with your children. I watched Twilight last Monday and it was a wonderful surprise. I didn´t think this film would be good but it was quite entertaining. Well, I just think that it takes too long to some action happen. I beleive it could be more dynamic. Apart from that, I haven´t read the books. I´ve heard that Twilight is part of a series of four books, so I guess we can wait for more adventures of Bella and Edward on the big screen for the next year :-).

Oh dear Leila, I hope you get well soon. Bye, bye and see you in January :-).

Nice to meet you Nghiahhh! Thanks for telling me how you spent your Christmas.

Hi Marianna! We also called hydrangea hortência here. I was delighted to read your weather report. It refreshed my hot and sunny day :-).

Dear friends, teachers and BBC LE staff I wish you all a wonderful 2009. May all your plans and dreams for this new year come true. I hope we can find a way for peace and a solution for this financial crisis.

May the force and good vibes be always with you all!!!!

Keep strutting your stuff and Happy New Year!!! :-)

Ana Paula.

Welcome 2009!!!

May the world be as paeceful and calm as me. It's a wish from this pigeon.

It's been great to catch up with you all again. I should say Thank You to BBC LE for that. May this global community of learners grow bigger and bigger and may there be peace and prosperity. May God bless every heart happiness and satisfaction 'cause when the inner self is happy and satisfied we are able to see the world with a better perspective and we can think better. So everyone, be happy and think positive, do your best to achieve your goals and have faith in God 'cause He is always up there to help you. Never lose your hope as everything happens for a reason and it happens when its time is written to happen.

What are your hopes and expectations for the up coming year? Have you made any resolutions? As for me, my hope for 2009 is to see a better world. I came across an interesting New Year resolution by Dima on the Staff blog which says that his New Year resolution is that he will stop making New Year resloutions and he feels he would be good at it:-)

According to the Islamic lunar calendar, the new year 1430 began on 30th December so New Year wishes from Islamic year too.

It was good to see all the teachers again but this time it was few I hope everything is well with all those who didn't show up this time. Dear Jo, best wishes for your new home, may you get lots of happiness:-). My best wishes are for all my blogmates and for those who couldn't participate in the open blog for some reasons. I'm very very thankful to all those lovely friends who never forget us to write their kind comments and make our day.

Marianna, it's been always good to see your comments. I have always loved to hear from you and the share of your word. Thank you! I hope you will love this picture of a pigeon standing on one foot or better say it is doing bird yoga:-).

James, thank you for your comments and your interesting as well as informative posts.

Fillipo, thank you for your nice comments and best New Year wishes to you.

Ana, your pomegranate tree is lovely. You are so lucky that you can eat your home grown pomegranates.

Anita, your London diary was great. My mum and sister only saw Trafalgar square and Oxford Street in London and some shopping places. Before going to London, they went to Lisbon and another place they visited called 'Fatima'.

Leila, best wishes to you for 2009 and thank you for your comments.

Cris, I hope you will not be too busy in cooking. Good luck!

Satya, let's wish together that may there be peace between our countries. When it come to peace and prosperity we are all one!

Thank you everyone and I'm so sorry if I couldn't mention anyone's name. The best part of this blogging is your comments so keep writing......

I call this ray 'Hope' and a little light in the dark is a hope that you can find your way through it. So hope for the new year is just like this ray of the sun.

Happy New Year!

Naheed

A happy ending

Hello there,

It has been drizzling all day long. Temperature is 12°c (54°f) in the evening; it’s much colder than December 1st of 24°c (75°f).

I am glad I have written the blog entry daily. To me, it is a happy ending today.

There are only 2 nations that have a non-profit TV channel, one is Japanese NHK, and the other is BBC. They are all awesome. Speaking of a global public service, BBC Learning English should be mentioned. They spent a large number of money to keep the website running, and so many people with great enthusiasm support it. Although BBC offers many languages’ learning, an outstanding and famous part is BBC English learning. People of around the world benefit from it with no cost at all. It is a great contribution.

The United States of American is indeed a strong and prospering nation however, the critics say that USA is usually to take rather than to give, that why she never offers such kind of thing like a free English Learning place. In other words, YoU Should Agree to pay everything is a golden rule to USA.

Nevertheless, the BBC English Learning team gives its contribution to the global; it implies that BBCLE makes the United Kingdom great.

The above opinion is only my personal point of view; I take the whole responsibility on it.

Wish BBC English Learning a long life.

See you around, my friends, and BBCLE team.

Happy New Year.

New Year wishes, hopes and dreams…

Hello friends,

It is the last day of open blogs….again. What is more, it is the last day of the year 2008. It is time to say thank and goodbye to everyone…

Well, I want to really thank the BBC LE team for giving us this opportunity, and also you, my blogmates and teacher bloggers for participating, and also you, dear commentators for writing, for your support, for your encouragement, and also you, readers for reading and for your interest.

It is a shame that I did not hear from Lewis Davies again, but I do hope he and his loved ones are doing well.

I would like to wish a Happy New Year to all of you and to your families! I hope 2009 will be a year filled with good health, happiness, freedom from war and violence and success for you.

The other day I was surfing on the internet and I found something that I want to share with you because these words express how I feel. Here it is: „Your Merry Christmas may depend on what others do for you. But your Happy New Year depends on what you do for others.” Do you believe that it is true?

Do you have any hopes and dreams for the New Year? For me, I think it will just be continuing to be creative in the kitchen, keep plugging away at our business venture, and hopefully brushing up on my English. Simple dreams for the New Year, but they should keep me busy enough.

Anyway, I am spending New Year with my husband at home. My son is going out with friends and Csilla is working in London. By the way, she has already booked her plane ticket to South America. She is flying to Brazil at the beginning of February.

Okay, now onto some replies. Oh, before I forget, here are some other beliefs I find to be quite interesting.
Hungarians are careful what they eat on January 1st. No one should eat fish or chicken because fish will swim away with your luck and chicken will scratch it back. If you want to be wealthy and lucky during the coming year, you must eat some form of pork because pigs root out your luck.
According to superstition, if the first person you meet on 1st January is male, you will have good luck. What a discriminatory belief!!!! Poor my husband! So, I am the reason why he is unlucky. :-D

Before saying goodbye, here are some quick replies. You know, I will continue to read the next bloggers’ entries on this page so I will see all of you in 2009 as well. Thank you for your lovely comments. I would like to wish you all the best.

Hyoshil, thank you for your all comments. I liked reading them. Thanks also for your advice. I will keep it in my mind. I am glad to hear that your Christmas was as good as you wished for yourself.

Filippo, I am so happy for you. Dublin sounds a great destination. Have a safe journey!

Rabail, nice to meet you! Rabail and Marianna, I keep trying to follow our Christmas tradition.

Leila, hope you feel better soon. I too wish you and your family a very happy New Year. The pictures of the Northern lights were marvellous. Thanks.

James, I think this open blog is for our fun, for making friends. I see what you mean as I also like being corrected. This way I can learn from my own mistake. Anyway, I liked reading your entries.

Ana Paula, I loved your pictures of pomegranate tree.

Cris - I am sure, your cooking will turn out lovely. Good luck! Thanks for your comments.

Naheed- I liked your last entry, as always.

Kiran, Satya, Adriana – great to hear from you again! My best wishes for you and your family!

See you all in January. Take care,

Anita

A very Happy New Year

Hi my beloved friends,

This time I’ve decided to steal my father’s time, using his computer. Wow! The speed is like a formula one for me... No harm...he is retired now after all. He is very jealous of his computer though. Anyway, don’t worry, he is sleeping after lunch.

The last time I wrote some few lines and showed pics at the villa of my Christmas very quickly.

My Christmas was perfect with 30 % of my family. My parents have got divorced many years ago. So that I’ve created a strategy to share special moments with all.

I divide my family in two parts.

a) 50% are at my father’s house: my father, my brother, his wife, his son, my sister, her boyfriend and their mother (my step-mother).
b) 50% are my 2 brothers with their respective wife, son and girlfriend, my other sister with her husband, our mother that has appeared again in our lives, my husband, my son and me.
However, my brother, his wife and son couldn’t arrive in time. That’s the reason there are only 30 % in the pictures but they arrived at the very Christmas day (25th).

It was very funny. I had a ball with them. My sister uses to register every Christmas and show the past Christmas to us as a clip and we make many jokes. Especially this year that everybody needs to save money. We gave to each other the oddest gifts of the planet. For example, my sister hás given to me a “Dengue Kit” with medicines and instructions because she said it’s coming a new stronger epidemy. Well, at least it’s useful.

Now we are planning to spend the next holliday with my other 50% of the family: Father and his staff. Does it seem to be complicated to you?

Well, the New Year is just around the corner and I have my New Year resolutions in mind:

1-To have a very good innternet connection
2-To pay all my bills
3-Convince my boss to let me do the course I want to do
4-To build a new house close to the sea and closer to my workplace at this place. I’m eagle to know the new neighbours.

Friends, I’d like to wish the best of the besto f the New Years to you all.

Good luck, peace, love, blessing and money to all
