This week Richard is off to Cheddar Gorge ... and two things immediately spring to his mind to investigate:- The Gorge and its caves, and Cheddar cheese. And he discovers that the two are actually linked ... the cheese used to be stored in the caves, and some say that's where the flavour comes from ... the two go hand-in-hand.
So first he explores the geology of the area with geologist Dr Willie Stanton, and descends into a curious dip in the landscape called a swallet hole.

Actually in the Gorge itself, in Gough's cave, archaeologist Dr Paula Gardiner tells the story of Cheddar Man, whose skeleton was discovered there in 1903. It's unique - the only one we have from the Mesolithic period. And the latest investigative techniques are being used to discover even more about his lifestyle ... could his DNA prove that he has a descendant living today?

... it did! At the top of the Gorge Richard meets Adrian Targett, a local history teacher who's directly related to Cheddar Man. He's bemused by the whole thing and says "In one sense we all have 9,000 year old ancestors. I just happen to be one of the lucky ones who found out one of them."
