Zoo celebrates birth of endangered pileated gibbon

The birth of a pileated gibbon was "great news for the conservation of the species", said a zoo.

Staff at Colchester Zoological Society in Essex discovered the new arrival in the early hours of 2 February and said the baby and parents, Qiwen and Lae, were doing well.

The last pileated gibbon, which is an endangered species due to its loss of habitat to farmland across South East Asia, had been born at the zoo in 2013.

Emma Rasey, a team leader at the zoo, said: "Ever since Qiwen arrived, her and Lae had such a bond. It is still early days, but we are feeling very positive with how Qiwen and Lae are carrying out their parental duties."
