Mother and daughter rescued from sinking sand

A woman and her young daughter had to be rescued with ropes after they became stuck in waist-deep sand on the Essex coast.

Lorry driver Adrian Pikula said he was walking with his own six-year-old daughter when he saw the emergency unfolding at Western Esplanade in Southend-on-Sea on Tuesday afternoon.

"[The woman] was very deep - probably about half of her body was in the mud. Of course, there was lots of drama. People were screaming and shouting and the kids were crying."

The 36-year-old said he alerted staff at the nearby Adventure Island.

Philip Miller MBE, executive chairman of the company that owns the attraction, thanked his team and said they were relieved they were "brought safely out".

"We hope they are both well after what must have been a very frightening experience," said Miller.
