Man 'kicked' at police at asylum hotel, trial hears

Footage allegedly showing an anti-asylum hotel protester kick a police officer and abusing others has been shown in court.

Phillip Curson, 53, is accused of being part of an "aggressive mob" outside The Bell Hotel in Epping on 17 July during a summer of protests in the Essex town.

Up to 500 people had gathered at the scene to protest against the hotel being used as asylum seeker accommodation.

Footage played to the jury at Chelmsford Crown Court on Tuesday showed a man, alleged to be Curson, kicking an officer and threatening a counter-demonstrator.

Another video allegedly showed his co-defendant, 43-year-old Lee Gower, grappling with police at two different cordons.

Curson, from Upminster, east London, and Gower, from Epping, are on trial and deny violent disorder.

The trial continues.
