John Smith's fiancee said his death "has left a massive hole in my heart"

A woman has paid tribute to "the kindest man I have ever met" after her fiancee died following a collision between a van and an e-scooter.

Hampshire police were called to the junction of Medina Road and Sixth Avenue in Cosham, Portsmouth, on 27 February.

The incident involved a white Ford Transit Tipper van and an e-scooter. The scooter rider, 59-year-old John Smith from Portsmouth, was taken to hospital but has since died.

The van driver, a 37-year-old man from Portsmouth, was arrested on suspicion of causing injury by dangerous driving and driving a vehicle while unfit through drugs. He has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Smith's fiancee said: "John would do anything for anyone and was extremely well thought of in the local community."

She added that he was "my rock and the kindest man I have ever met".

"John was a lovely man whose three main passions were Portsmouth Football Club, following Luke Littler and Ska music," she added.

"His passing has left a massive hole in my heart, and he was taken from me so suddenly."

She said Smith was "a loved and much-missed son and older brother who spent 10 years working closely with his father".

The police said the van driver had also been arrested on "suspicion of driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence and using a motor vehicle on a road without third party insurance".

It has appealed for any witnesses or motorists with relevant dashcam footage to get in touch.
