A man has suffered potentially life-threatening injuries in a serious crash involving an e-scooter and a van, police said.

Hampshire police said officers were called to the junction of Medina Road and Sixth Avenue at about 16:15 GMT on Friday.

The rider of the e-scooter, a man aged in his 50s, was taken to hospital with serious injuries, said the force.

A 37-year-old man, from Portsmouth, who was driving a white Ford Transit Tipper van, was arrested on suspicion of causing injury by dangerous driving and driving a vehicle while unfit through drugs, it confirmed.

The van driver was also arrested on suspicion of driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence and using a motor vehicle on a road without third party insurance, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said. He has since been released on bail pending further enquiries.

The force has asked witnesses and anyone with relevant dashcam footage to get in touch.
