Police in lorry catch six drivers on their phones
Cambridgeshire PolicePolice patrolled a county's roads in a HGV during a crackdown on drivers using mobile phones.
On 26 January, officers from Cambridgeshire Police drove an adapted lorry on roads including the A1(M), A1307, A14 and M11.
The cab gave officers a clear line-of-sight into other vehicles. The team spotted six motorists on their phones and took photos of them. Those drivers could be fined £200 and get six points on their licence.
The officers also stopped vehicles being driven without due care, with insecure loads and excessively tinted windows.
'Tragic results'
Sgt Chris Payne, from the force's commercial vehicle unit, said: "Unfortunately, too many motorists fail to appreciate how their actions behind the wheel can impact themselves, their passengers, and others sharing the road.
"We have witnessed the tragic results that even a brief lapse in attention can bring. If you feel the urge to use your mobile whilst driving, it's best to put it safely out of reach in the glove box or boot.
"We are committed to continuing our efforts to clamp down on those who disregard the law, ensuring our roads remain safe for everyone."
