Road safety campaigners have been celebrating the switching on of a new traffic light crossing.

Its construction follows years of petitioning by parents and residents worried about safety on a section of Epsom Road, in Guildford, Surrey.

They had raised concerns there were no crossings between Boxgrove Road and Waterden Road, despite the area being close to the Royal Grammar School, nurseries and NHS facilities.

Elderly residents also said they struggled to cross the road to reach doctors, dentists and pharmacies.

A parent who launched a petition two years ago, Sam Neatrour, said he was glad the road was now "safer for everyone".

"I will continue my campaign for 20mph zones to make the roads of Guildford safer for everyone," he said.

Former Surrey councillor Fiona Davidson said it was "satisfying" to see something people feel strongly about being delivered.

In 2024, 1,000 people signed a petition calling on Surrey County Council to do something about the road campaigners described as "incredibly dangerous".

It demanded the installation of a pedestrian crossing and a 20mph [32km/h] limit.

While a crossing, by a turn off at Upper Edgeborough Road, is now in place there are no confirmed plans to cut the speed limit from 30mph.
