A proposal to impose 20mph speed limits in more than 80 residential roads in Guildford have been put to the public.

Plans by Surrey County Council (SCC) would see a reduced speed limit imposed in Bushy Hill Drive and surrounding roads, including Ashbury Crescent, Boxgrove Lane and Curlew Gardens.

The project would cost about £30,000, which would come from a separate 20mph budget, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

The council said that lower speed limits would result in fewer crashes and serious injuries, as well as a safer environment for children and older residents.

In recent times, the council has consulted on similar schemes in Dorking, Woking and Walton-on-Thames.

Speed surveys undertaken by SCC showed that most drivers were already travelling fairly slowly, so no speed bumps or major traffic calming were planned.

Instead, some areas may get "light-touch" measures like electronic speed signs or painted markings on the road where speeds were highest, the council said.

It added that the scheme was designed to be "self-enforcing", with no extra police patrols or traffic calming measures planned.

A full list of roads included in the plans can be found on the public consultation, which remains open until 9 February.
