New 20mph zones planned to make streets safer
Ben Birchall/PA WireNew 20mph speed limits are being planned across three Surrey neighbourhoods to try to make the streets safer.
Surrey County Council (SCC) is consulting on new slower-speed zones in Barnsbury and Bonsey Lane in Woking, the Goodwyns estate in Dorking, and the Parsonage Road area of Cranleigh.
According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the schemes would each cost £20,000.
Speed surveys carried out by SCC showed drivers in all three areas were already mostly respecting limits, meaning the new rules could be brought in without speed bumps or chicanes.
GoogleIn Woking, some "light-touch" measures such as vehicle-activated signs or painted roundels could be added on Bonsey Lane as an extra reminder to keep speeds down, said the council.
The consultation website read: "Research suggests 20mph schemes do not increase air pollution.
"Slower vehicle speeds support a shift to more walking, scooting and cycling and then fewer polluting vehicles on the roads...
"Some people are concerned that 20mph may lead to increased journey times.
"However, most of the delays that occur for motor vehicles in built up areas are at junctions, rather than the roads between junctions."
Separately, SCC has also recently consulted on reducing the speed limit to 20mph in four four streets in Woking: Orchard Mains, Wych Hill Rise, Blackbridge Road, and Fernhill Close.
Residents can view the latest consultation online or at local libraries.
