The next phase of a major road upgrade that aims to improve a Surrey town's traffic flow and infrastructure is due to start.

The project is part of the Weyside Urban Village regeneration programme, led by Guildford Borough Council.

A spokesperson for the local authority said work on Woodlands Road junction and Moorfield Road junction in Woking Road is scheduled to start on Wednesday.

Vanessa King, lead councillor for economy and place, said the scheme would "improve the network for new homes and community facilities, while also helping to manage current traffic more effectively".

This includes replacing the existing roundabout with a signal-controlled four-way junction at Woodlands Road.

Upgraded footways and new pedestrian crossing will be installed at Moorfield Road junction, as well as improved lanes for drivers to easily access Slyfield Industrial Estate, a major economic hub of Guildford.

The council says the removal of the Woodland Road roundabout is due to start on 2 March and will take about six weeks to complete.

A lane closure will be in place overnight and it will be lifted each morning to minimise disruption to daytime traffic.

The council says the work is expected to take about 12 months to complete, and the scheme will be carried out in phases.
