Gas pipes dating from 1912 to be replaced
GoogleGas pipes installed in the year that the Titanic sank are to be replaced to update the local network, a gas supplier has said.
Cadent Gas Ltd said the project in Sleaford would replace almost 2,000 metres of pipes dating from 1912 with tough new pipes to future-proof the network.
The company said the upgrade would start on Grantham Road, with further work taking place in Mareham Lane and Ickworth Road.
Cadent said it would carry out the works over an 11-week period from Monday 2 February to Wednesday 15 April.
The works, which the company said were "essential", would also have an impact on several neighbouring roads including Charlotte Street, St Edmonds Road, King Edward Street, Victoria Street and Lord Street.
Cadent said the gas would stay on during the works, but that properties taking a direct feed from the pipes being replaced would have a temporary interruption to their supply. Advance notice will be given to the properties affected.
Richard Sansom, Network Director for Cadent in the East Midlands, said the upgrade would offer environmental gains.
"They reduce methane emissions and enable a move to more renewable gases like biomethane," he said.
"This is essential for a cleaner future - the UK will need energy to come from a range of sources to meet demand and be sustainable."
