Lulworth Estate has closed the beach steps for public safety

Access to a popular beach on Dorset's Jurassic Coast has been closed after storms destroyed part of the steps.

The path to Durdle Door beach has been temporarily closed for "public safety" by landowner Lulworth Estate after the bottom section was washed away, leaving a steep drop.

Visitor access to nearby Man O' War beach remains open.

A spokesperson said: "Weather conditions may continue to affect the coastline and the Lulworth Estate team encourages everyone to exercise caution and respect temporary closures put in place for public safety."

Work has been continuing along the coast to replenish beaches stripped of sand and to remove a sandbar that partially blocked the harbour at West Bay following south-easterly storms.

A large cliff collapse has also blocked the coastal path at Stonebarrow, near Charmouth.

Lulworth Estate said storms had resulted in "significant disruption to coastal access" and the safety of visitors remained its "highest priority".

It has not given a timeline for the path reopening but said it would provide an update when more information was available.
