More than 3,000 street charging points will be installed over five years

More than 3,000 on-street car charging points are to be installed across Dorset as part of a £16.5m scheme.

The five-year project, announced by Dorset Council and Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole Council (BCP) will allow more people without off-street parking to charge vehicles near their homes.

The project is being funded by £4m from the Department for Transport Local EV Infrastructure (LEVI) Fund, along with private sector investment.

It aims to help more people make the switch before new petrol and diesel cars are phased out by 2030.

Dorset Council's councillor for place services, Jon Andrews, said: "There's only four years to go until new petrol and diesel cars will no longer be sold and we need to be prepared."

BCP climate and transport councillor Andy Hadley said: "This rollout, fully funded by the government and private sector investment, is about making life easier for our communities while reinforcing Dorset and BCP's position as a hub for green investment."

The project will be delivered by Connected Kerb.
