A yellow weather warning for rain covering the south west has been issued by the Met Office.

The warning, affecting Cornwall and Devon, has been put in place from 15:00 GMT on Monday until 12:00 on Tuesday.

The Met Office said outbreaks of rain would affect parts of south west England from Monday afternoon to Tuesday morning before clearing to heavy showers later on Tuesday.

It said rainfall totals were expected to reach around 20mm (2cm) to 30mm (3cm), with 50mm (5cm) to 80 mm (8cm) likely across higher ground, especially Dartmoor.

The latest warning comes as a massive clear-up continues after Storm Ingrid lashed Devon and Cornwall. A sea wall protecting the railway line at nearby Dawlish partially collapsed and train services were suspended between Exeter St Davids and Plymouth on Saturday

The Met Office said there could be delays or cancellations to train and bus services and heavy rain was likely to bring flooding in places.

It added power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses was possible.

Damaged bridges

Great Western Railway (GWR) said the train line between between Par and Newquay was closed due to flooding on Monday.

It said disruption was expected until the end of the day and rail replacement transport would be in place between St Austell and Newquay.

The line between Liskeard and Looe was also closed due to flooding with rail replacement transport in place and coaches departing from Liskeard and Looe at train times, GWR said.

It said heavy rainfall during December combined with high tides resulted in water levels at several bridges along the branch line being above the level which allowed them to run trains safely.

It added this had caused some damage to bridges which would require repairs.

GWR said disruption was expected until the end of the day on 28 January.
