The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for frequent heavy snow along parts of the east coast of England.

The alert is in place - for much of Norfolk, Lincolnshire, East Yorkshire, North Yorkshire, Durham, Tyne and Wear, and Northumberland - between 17:00 GMT and 23:59 on Saturday.

Between 1cm and 3cm (0.4in to 1in) of snow was forecast to accumulate.

A Met Office spokesperson added: "Frequent heavy snow showers, moving in from the coast, may bring disruption to travel on Friday night and Saturday."

Some roads and railways could be affected, with longer journey times, and there could be icy patches on roads, pavements and cycle paths - especially on Saturday night.

Showers were expected to become less frequent into Saturday evening, the Met Office said, and becoming gradually lighter and less frequent into Sunday morning.
