A stretch of motorway closed for major engineering works will reopen on time or earlier than expected, a council has said.

The M27 has been shut in both directions between Junction 11 for Fareham and Junction 9 for Segensworth since Christmas Eve.

It is part of an innovative project to build a new underpass for access to the new Welborne Garden Village.

Nick Adams-King, leader of Hampshire County Council, said the work had progressed well and the motorway would be reopen by 04:00 GMT on Sunday at the latest.

"We will be letting people know later in the week the exact point at which we will be open," he said, adding that he was "hopeful" it could reopen sooner.

There is a signed diversion route along the A27 while the works are completed.
