'Major milestone' completed in motorway project

M27 project progress shown in Hampshire County Council video

A new underpass has been successfully put in place, completing a "major engineering milestone" in a £100m motorway project.

Hampshire County Council said the complex operation on the M27 near Fareham took less than 20 hours and was completed overnight on Friday.

A time-lapse film shared by the authority shows how teams slid an 8,500-tonne concrete structure into place beneath the motorway.

The motorway remains closed in both directions between Junction 9 for Whiteley and 11 for Fareham until 04:00 on 4 January.

The council said the embankments will be built and the motorway surface replaced in the coming days.

It added that the newly installed four-lane wide underpass will "enhance connectivity" across this part of Hampshire and support the growth of the Welborne Garden Village development.

People have been advised to avoid the area while the work takes place.
