A police officer who was bitten on her hand several times during an arrest has been awarded for her bravery.

Wiltshire police officers and staff were recognised during an awards ceremony on 21 January at their headquarters in Devizes.

Alex Spargo received the Chief Constable's Commendation for her work in a drug supply investigation and for helping arrest a shoplifter who bit her on the hand and sprayed her in the face with an aerosol can.

Deputy Chief Constable Mark Cooper said: "Each ceremony reminds me how privileged I am to hear the remarkable stories of dedication, courage, and commitment shown by those who serve Wiltshire Police."

Other awards presented included the Outstanding Teamwork Award, the Chief Constable's Certificate of Excellence, the Lifetime Achievement and the Chief Constable's Certificates of Recognition of the Public.

Speaking after the ceremony, Police and Crime Commissioner Philip Wilkinson said: "What we have recognised today reflects the strength and commitment that exists across Wiltshire.

"Their contributions make a real and practical difference to the safety and confidence of our communities, and it is important that we acknowledge the impact of that work."
