A flood alert is to remain in place for parts of Surrey after heavy rain resulted in some rivers bursting their banks on Thursday.

Affected sections of the River Wey saw roads deluged, while water levels reached 1.79m (5ft 10in) at Tilford - just above the point where property flooding becomes possible.

On Friday, the government removed the flood warning it had previously issued for Elstead and Eashing, but said an alert "remains in force for the wider area".

"Flooding of roads and low lying land is still possible," it added.

"We expect river levels to remain high over the next few days," said the government.

"We will continue to monitor the situation and will issue further alerts or warnings if necessary.

"Continue to take care on waterside roads and footpaths and don't put yourself in unnecessary danger."

Urging drivers to take precautions, it added: "Never drive through flood water, just 30cm of fast flowing water is enough to move your car."

The current flood alert is for the Upper Wey area and includes Alton, Farnham, Bordon, Frensham, Tilford, Godalming, Guildford and Peasmarsh.

A swollen River Mole had also left fields submerged outside Leatherhead, BBC Radio Surrey reported.
