Heavy rain sparks flood alerts in South East
JOHN GFlood alerts remain in place for rivers across south-east England as heavy rain fall hits the region.
A yellow weather warning for heavy rain has been issued for 09:00 GMT to 22:00 on Thursday.
Officials have warned of flooding of some homes, businesses and roads across Kent, East Sussex, West Sussex and Surrey, as well as disruption to bus and train services.
A flood alert has been issued for the Cuckmere River in Hellingly and Alfriston by the Environment Agency, with local residents advised to avoid roads that flood.
"Don't put yourself or others at risk," a spokesperson said.
JanasisOther rivers with flood alerts include the River Medway, River Stour, Rivers Eden and Eden Brook, and River Stour.
The Met Office said the rain would be '"accompanied by strengthening winds" later on Thursday, and that gusts about 50mph may be possible along some exposed coasts.
Lizzie's ViewSussex Emmaus, a charity that helps rough sleepers, has urged the public to help protect people during severe weather.
It is asking those who are worried about someone sleeping outside, including in tents and doorways, to report their concern on the Streetlink website, which alerts local services who can offer support.
Karen Chapman, chief executive of Sussex Emmaus, said: "We work year-round to support people on their journey out of homelessness, but winter brings added urgency, so we are calling on the Sussex community to act with care and compassion."
