Flooding of properties and roads is expected in an area of Surrey as river levels continue to rise, the government says.

A flood warning was issued on Thursday morning for the Rivery Wey at Elstead and Eashing, with the Tilford area expected to be particularly affected.

The government said the River Wey level at Tilford had reached 1.79m (5ft 10in). Property flooding becomes possible once levels rise above 1.74m (5ft 8.5in).

"Further heavy rainfall is forecast over the next 24 hours. We expect river levels to remain high over the next few days," the government added.

The warning urges residents to "act now" by moving people, pets and valuables to a safe place, turning off gas, electricity and water, and putting flood protection equipment in place.

The River Mole has also burst its banks outside Leatherhead, BBC Radio Surrey reported.

Flooding of low-lying land, roads and footpaths near the river remained possible throughout Thursday and overnight into Friday, the government said.
