A golfer has described a moment of disbelief when his ball ended up in the middle of a frozen water hazard.

Stewart Owen, from New Milton, was taking advantage of the bright, clear conditions in Hampshire on Monday to enjoy a round at Barton-on-Sea.

But on the 18th hole, he watched his ball "just skate across" the ice to the centre of a frozen moat.

Snow and ice warning were in place as temperatures dipped to -8C at Bournemouth Airport on Monday night.

Owen described playing on the course that overlooks the Solent with views over to the Needles on the Isle of Wight.

"It was a bit cold but it was a fun walk," he said.

"The greens were very hard.

"The ball landed on the green, took two bounces to the right and literally rolled another 20ft across the ice into the middle of the moat."

He added: "I had to take a picture for my own benefit because I was laughing so much after I'd I watched it just skate across."

He said some his his friends had jokingly suggested he "play as it lies".

"It was great fun - I won't forget the last hole there for a long time," he said.
