The eight bikes will link the station with the town centre, the council said

Foldable bicycles have been installed at Pershore railway station with an eight-bike, solar-powered dock.

Wychavon District Council said the Brompton bikes, on council-owned land at Wilmots Business Park, were part of a plan to make everyday journeys healthier, greener and easier.

With the station more than 1.5km (0.9 miles) from the town centre, the council said the new bikes provided "the perfect link between the two" for both commuters and residents.

A cycle lane along Station Road makes the route safe and sustainable, the council added.

Councillor Beverley Hardman said it was a "real step forward"

Councillor Beverley Hardman said: "This is a real step forward for active travel in our district, giving people a practical and sustainable way to connect the station with the town centre."

The bikes can be hired for £5 a day on the Brompton hire app, and should be collected from the dock and returned there after use.

People are advised to download the app and verify their ID before hiring a bike, and instructions for folding and unfolding the bikes are on the lockers at the dock.
