Main city road partially shut after sewer bursts

A burst sewer pipe under a main road into a city centre has resulted in the road partially closing.

The Southern Water sewer main burst beneath the A2030 Eastern Road in Portsmouth, initially closing the road both ways between Tangier Road and Burrfields Road.

Portsmouth City Council said one lane had since been able to open in each direction, with drivers urged to allow extra time for their journeys.

More than 1,000m of pipe from Farlington roundabout to beyond Anchorage Road was relined by the water company in May-July 2024 after frequent sewer bursts, leaks, and flooding.

Apologising to residents in the area "who may be experiencing disruption", Southern Water said teams were on site investigating the suspected burst sewer main.

The water firm said once investigations were completed "we'll be carrying out the necessary repair works… we will be working as quickly as possible to have this resolved."
