Police are investigating a stabbing that has caused a potentially life-threatening injury.

Officers said a male, whose age has not been confirmed, was attacked on Hawthorn Crescent in Cosham, Portsmouth, shortly before 14:30 GMT.

Hawthorn Crescent was shut at the junction with Portsmouth Road to allow officers to investigate, and the Highbury campus of City of Portsmouth College was placed into lockdown. The college has since said it has been able to send students home.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said an investigation had been launched and inquiries were under way.

A force spokesperson added: "Emergency services have attended and the male has been taken to hospital with a serious, possibly life-threatening puncture injury."
