Work on the Pier Gardens revamp in Cleethorpes is starting on Monday

Work to revamp Pier Gardens in Cleethorpes will start soon.

The project, which features a water play, terraced play features, an event space and a quieter area, is part of a wider £18.4m regeneration scheme.

Landscape contractor Maylim has been appointed to carry out the work, which is costing £7.9m.

North East Lincolnshire Council said work would start on Monday 9 February and the gardens would be closed from the following day. The project is expected to be finished in May.

Fencing will be installed around the gardens, along the pathways from Central Promenade and around a small section of Alexandra Road.

The council said this would allow contractors to take over the site and create access opposite the end of Dolphin Street for vehicle deliveries into the gardens.

Tom Taylor, from Maylim, said the project was designed to bring the community together and provide a beautiful space that people would want to spend time in.

"We're looking forward to working with the community through local employment and business opportunities, along with a series of events to engage the whole community," he added.

Other features include a small skate park at the Sea Road end of the garden, an education area with a small amphitheatre and a remembrance area.

Council leader Philip Jackson said: "Landscaping changes over the years, just look at previous formal gardens in stately homes that were designed centuries ago. That's, essentially, what Pier Gardens used to be when the railway first came to town.

"It's time for us to change this and make them fit for the future and I'm looking forward to seeing this project on the ground in the coming weeks."

The project is one of three in Cleethorpes being funded by the government. The others are the Sea Road development and Market Place.
