Bird flu case prompts 3km monitoring zone

A 3km (1.9 mile) monitoring zone has been put in place across a Somerset town after a case of bird flu was identified.

The government's chief veterinary officer put the measures in place in Yeovil from 17:45 BST on Thursday. They will apply until the declaration is withdrawn or amended, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said.

The exact premises where the virus has been identified has not been named. It comes after cases were also found at a commercial poultry business near Tiverton and at a site near Winsford on Exmoor.

Efforts must be made to record the movements of captive birds and eggs in the 3km control area and clean any vehicles which may have been contaminated.
