Work on the multi-million pound revamp of a town's police station is underway.

Yeovil's policing teams have been based temporarily in Somerset Council offices in Brympton Way since 2020, while a plan was made for their headquarters in Horsey Lane.

The station refurbishments include upgrading mechanical and electrical systems and adding a garage. The project is set to finish next year.

Neighbourhood Inspector Rose Green from Avon and Somerset Police said the scheme "represents a significant investment in policing in Yeovil".

The force's plan also includes building an external staircase to meet fire safety standards, and a new police inquiry office.

A temporary police inquiry office in a portacabin outside the Horsey Lane base is being moved to Brympton Way.

It is expected to reopen in March and stay open until the works are completed.

Police will continue to operate from Brympton Way during the refurbishment.

Green said: "This project represents a significant investment in policing in Yeovil and will provide a modern base that better supports our officers and staff as they serve the community."

It is part of a £12.6m investment over the next two years to progress the force's estates in Somerset.
