Hazel Avenue was closed on Friday but has since reopened

Police had contact with a man the night before he was found dead outside a property, a watchdog has said.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said it was investigating Surrey Police after being told officers had spoken to a man whose body was discovered on Hazel Avenue in Guildford on Friday morning.

Officers in a police vehicle dropped him off at a property in the town after a reported disturbance at a hotel bar at about 20:30 GMT the previous night, IOPC investigators said.

Surrey Police was contacted for comment.

An IOPC spokesperson said: "Our investigation is in its initial stages and we have begun reviewing police logs and body worn footage."

The watchdog said it would gather accounts from the officers involved.

Surrey Police previously said the death of the man, who is in his 30s, was being treated as "unexplained".

The IOPC said it had notified the man's family of its investigation.
