The early morning crash caused delays of more than an hour, police said

Motorists faced long delays on the M61 motorway in Lancashire after two cars collided and one hit the central reservation.

Lancashire Police said the two vehicles crashed near junction 8 at Chorley at 07:00 GMT and one hit the barrier.

There are not thought to have been any injuries but police said it caused nearly 80 minutes of delays.

The crash caused tailbacks of about four miles (6.4km). National Highways said it was later fully re-opened just before midday as congestion eased.

A spokesperson said: "Repairs are complete and all lanes have reopened in both directions on the M61 in Lancashire between J6 (Bolton) and J8 (Chorley) following a collision which damaged the central reservation barrier.

"There are slight residual delays in the area, these will begin to ease."

Later, a separate crash on the M6 near Preston led to delays for drivers.
