When are Eid celebrations across the North West?

Eid, the festival which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, will take place on either Thursday or Friday this week depending on the sighting of the moon with a series of events planned.

The feast of Eid-al-Fitr (also known as Eid ul-Fitr) marks the end of the period where Muslims fast between dawn and sunset.

It typically features communal prayers, charity, family visits and gift-giving to celebrate spiritual renewal.

Here are some of the biggest celebrations happening across the region.

Greater Manchester

A family funfair to mark Eid will be held at Platt Fields Park between 12:00 and 18:00 GMT on Friday, Saturday or Sunday - although the popular Eid in the Park celebration will no longer take place due to the ground conditions being too soft.

Organisers of Eid in the Park said the decision was due to safety and operational provisions associated with large gatherings.

Alfurqan Masjid and Islamic Centre has confirmed it will host several Eid prayer sessions to help accommodate people who would normally attend the event.

For a more high-energy party, Eid Opulence will be held on Saturday.

The ticketed event is being held at Xscape on Whitworth Street West, Manchester, from 22:00 until 04:00.

There is an Eid Festival on 4 April at the West Indian Community Centre in Longsight, with spoken word poetry, comedy among the attractions at the ticketed event between 13:00 and 18:00.

Blackburn is staging its first two-day Eid Festival with a packed programme of free family events.

The Chaand Raat Celebration (which means Moon Night) is being held to celebrate the night before Eid from 19:00 until late, hosted by Blush Hair and Beauty Salon at Reel Cinema Blackburn on Nab Lane featuring special films on a big screen, DJs, family entertainment as well as Mendhi (henna) stalls.

The main event is being held in the town centre on Saturday between 12:00 and 16:00 featuring live singers, henna artists, glass painting workshops and more.

East Lancashire Cricket Club, Blackburn, is running an Eid in the Park event with prayers at 09:30 on Eid day.

City Mosque Preston is holding Eid prayers at the mosque on Eid morning - and in the afternoon they are hosting an Eid celebration for new Muslims and singles to celebrate together from 14:00 BST.

Uzma Khan of Rang & Rhythm Events said it will be the biggest Eid event held in Blackpool and the ticketed event would be a "cultural celebration, not a religious one".

It takes place between 16:00 and 20:00.

Merseyside

Al-Rahma Mosque in Liverpool is holding Sisters Eid – Bring A Dish Gathering - after Eid prayers on Friday.

The event is taking place in the Women's Section of the Central Mosque in Liverpool.

Fozia's at the Grand Central Hall on Renshaw Street Liverpool, is having a ticketed Eid party on Eid day between 12:00 and 18:00 for food and family entertainment, including face painting and a bouncy castle.

Fozia's said solo guests are particularly welcome.

Sisters of the Sunnah are staging the Gardens of Barakah Annual Eid Party at Heatons Muslim Community Trust on Battersea Road, Heaton.

They promise fun, faith, and food at their sisterhood gathering which starts at 18:45 on 27 March.
