Man arrested over hotel ‘explosive device’

A man has been arrested on suspicion of making an explosive device after a hotel in the heart of Manchester's gay village was evacuated.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said a large section of Canal Street in the city centre was cordoned off after a suspicious smell came from the hotel room at 10:45 BST on Monday.

GMP said the hotel guest was arrested and staff and other guests were evacuated. as a "precautionary measure".

The force said in an update that subsequent tests of the chemical substances found in the hotel room had "ruled out any explosive risk".
