A woman died near the A127 in Essex prompting a four-hour closure while emergency services attended, police confirmed.

Essex Police said it was called to reports of concern for a woman's welfare at 06:25 GMT on Tuesday.

A 73-year-old woman died at the scene and her death is not being treated as suspicious, the force said.

The westbound carriageway at Rayleigh Weir travelling towards Southend-on-Sea was reopened at 12:45.

No other vehicles were involved and no injuries to other people were reported, police said.

A file would be prepared for the coroner, it added.

The force thanked the public for their patience while an investigation was carried out, which prompted the road closure throughout rush hour.
