Floodwater was "about a centimetre off coming in" to the River Walk Cafe, its owner has said

Floodwater came within a centimetre of a cafe in Surrey and forced it to close, its owner has said.

Multiple flood alerts remain in place across the county – including areas near the River Wey, part of the River Thames and some tributary rivers – following recent heavy rainfall.

Flooding of low-lying land and roads remained "possible" and further rainfall was forecast, according to the Environment Agency.

John Kelly, owner of the River Walk Cafe in Godalming, said that he was forced to close the site on Friday as patrons "couldn't actually get in without wellies".

Kelly told BBC Radio Surrey that water "didn't actually get into the cafe, which it had done last year", but was "about a centimetre off coming in".

The cafe is located on an island in the River Wey.

Some Parkrun events in Surrey were called off on Saturday due to the weather, including the Nonsuch and Frimley Lodge events.

Barry Allen, a volunteer marshal at Woking Parkrun, said that the event could go ahead after water levels subsided, but there had been about 2ft (60cm) of water on a 200-yard (180m) stretch of our course.

Regarding the flood alerts, authorities said: "We expect river levels to remain high over the next few days."
