Council to trial 'school streets' under new plans

Vehicles could be banned from driving on roads leading to schools at the start and end of the day under new council plans.

Wokingham Borough Council leaders voted last week to launch a consultation on a draft plan to improve transport and reduce traffic on its roads.

The plans suggest that the "school streets" could be trialled in some places, along with improving "independent access" to amenities including schools.

Exact dates for the consultation have not yet been announced, but the council said it aims to run it in the winter of 2023-24.

The plan said the council would "develop a sustainable routes to school strategy" to "enable more walking, cycling and wheeling to school".

It is also designed to "promote increased physical activity in young people", the council said.

"We will also investigate locations to introduce school streets," it added.
