Suffolk Police began a murder investigation after a prisoner from HMP Highpoint died in hospital

Murder inquiry officers have made a second arrest following the death of a prison inmate who was reportedly attacked.

Suffolk Police began an investigation after a 28-year-old man being held at HMP Highpoint in Stradishall, near Haverhill, died at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge on Tuesday 27 January.

The force arrested a man in his 20s on suspicion of murder and questioned him at Bury St Edmunds police investigation centre before he was released back into custody.

On Tuesday, police said another inmate, a man in his 30s, had been also arrested on suspicion of murder.

"Police continue to work closely with HMP Highpoint to establish the full circumstances of the incident," a spokesperson said.

"Formal identification of the deceased is yet to take place and the family are being supported by specialist trained officers."

The inmate who died was first treated at the hospital on 23 January before he was returned to the prison.

He was readmitted to hospital four days later.

A post-mortem examination took place on 30 January. The cause of death will be subject to further investigation.

HMP Highpoint is a category C male prison with 1,300 inmates.
