A crash between a car and a bus was not caused by a diversion or extra traffic from a motorway closure, police have said.

The incident on the A6 between Hackthorpe and Thrimby in Cumbria on Saturday affected the main diversion route while the M6 is closed between junctions 39 at Shap and 40 near Penrith for the demolition of Clifton railway bridge.

The driver of the car, a man in his sixties, remains in a stable condition in hospital, and his injuries were not thought to be life threatening, Cumbria Police said.

"Initial enquiries indicate there is no evidence to suggest that the diversion or traffic resulting from the M6 closure contributed to the collision," a police spokesperson added.

The collision happened at about 15:35 GMT on Saturday, leaving the road temporarily blocked.

There were no reported injuries to any of the passengers on the bus or the driver.

Cumbria Police is asking for anyone with information about the incident to report it.
