And manager David O'Leary must have expected three points in their opening game of the season against Southampton.

The tension was building around Elland Road after a first half of missed opportunities.

But a second half goal from Lee Bowyer and a memorable effort from Alan Smith, a substitute for Robbie Keane, ensured a winning start.

Smith's goal was typical of the young striker.

Harry Kewell slipped the ball into the path of Mark Viduka who duly found Eirik Bakke.

Bakke then fed a neat pass to the feet of the England international.

Smith turned Dean Richards in sensational fashion before slotting a tremendous effort beyond Paul Jones.

It was a wonderful solo goal to make the game safe for a Leeds side keen to run Manchester United all the way to this year's Premiership title.
