| Sunday, 3 March, 2002, 19:35 GMT Marsden's marvel ![]() It would take a special goal to deny Dennis Bergkamp's wonder strike against Newcastle the title of Goal of the Week. But Chris Marsden produced exactly that. Bergkamp's catalogue of amazing goals is so extensive we almost expect it as a matter of course from Arsenal's Dutch striker. It's almost an event when he scores a tap-in. In contrast, Marsden's mazy dribble against Ipswich was so out of keeping from the Southampton midfielder that it stood out. There seemed little danger when Marsden collected a loose ball just inside the left touchline. Carbon copy His deft nutmeg of Matt Holland would have been enough to produce gasps of surprise from Southampton fans, but Marsden began to drift ominously inside. A player not noted for his dribbling skills then dropped a shoulder to cut insde Jermaine Wright, and had gathered momentum by the time he cut into the box to be confronted by Hermann Hreidarsson. The Icelandic defender could not make a challenge for fear of conceding a penalty and Marsden continued to cut diagonally into the danger zone. By this time, Marsden's run was looking remarkably like a carbon-copy of John Barnes memorable goal against Brazil in the Maracana Stadium. The resemblance became a clone as Marsden skipped round keeper Andy Marshall's dive to poke the ball into an empty net. |
