![]() | Monday, 18 February, 2002, 09:00 GMT Ty's screaming big dipper ![]() It will come as some consolation to Ty Gooden that in a game of outstanding goals, his stood out. Gillingham threw a scare into Premiership aristocrats Arsenal by twice drawing level after the Gunners had taken the lead in the FA Cup fifth round tie at Highbury. Marlon King's powerful strike to wipe out Sylvain Wiltord's opener for Arsenal might have been a candidate for goal of the week. So might Ray Parlour's volley, struck with the outside of his right foot, which rounded off the Gunners' 5-2 win. But Gooden's wicked big dipper takes the honour of being BBC Sport Online's goal of the week. Invitation Former Arsenal apprentice Gooden was surrounded by red shirts as Chris Hope headed the ball forward. Patrick Vieira, Edu, Ray Parlour and Sol Campbell closed in as Gooden battled to master a bouncing ball. But Gooden kept a cool head, and as he flipped the ball over Campbell's unconvincing challenge, it sat up invitingly. It was an invitation Gooden needed no second chance to accept. He struck the ball on the rise, obtaining the dip necessary to arc it over a despairing Richard Wright who could only watch it sail over him in the Arsenal goal. There is always an element of luck involved in such a strike, but as they say in football, if you don't buy a ticket, you won't win the raffle. |
