![]() | Monday, 3 December, 2001, 09:43 GMT Radzinski's run ![]() BBC Sport Online's goal of the week is Tomasz Radzinski's opening goal for Everton against Southampton. It was only recently that Tomasz Radzinski was complaining about having to play with a different partner every week. Against Southampton on Sunday, he was the only natural forward wearing the Everton blue, with Steve Watson, nominally a defender, supporting him. During the first half, he must have wondered whether his team-mates realised he was on the field, such was the paucity of the home side's offence.
In the second half, he was aided by Paul Gascoigne's introduction, and the former England international provided the surging runs which unhinged the visitors. That period of Everton pressure was punctuated with a stunning strike. It all began with a tremendous clearance from Mark Pembridge, which saw the ball soar out of defence and towards Watson who was standing by the halfway line. The former Newcastle and Aston Villa hooked the ball into the path of the on-running Radzinski, who was unmarked on the left wing. With Southampton defender Paul Williams reticent to close down the Everton striker, Radzinski stormed into the penalty area before slotting home a tidy finish from 12 yards. |
