![]() | Monday, 21 January, 2002, 13:28 GMT Mboma's rocket ![]() Patrick Mboma's thumping shot for Cameroon in the African Cup of Nations is BBC Sport Online's Goal of the Week. Defending champions Cameroon had Patrick Mboma to thank for a winning start to their African Cup of Nations campaign. Cameroon were making heavy weather of their opening fixture against the Democratic Republic of Congo. Mboma had already missed one chance to put the Indomitable Lions ahead in the first-half, when he slipped in the act of shooting when well-placed. There seemed little danger when he picked up a short pass midway inside the DR Congo half on 40 minutes.
But the Parma striker had other thoughts. He cut inside, with four DR Congo defenders apparently mesmerised and failing to get in a challenge. It was an invitation Mboma was not prepared to pass up as he let fly with his left foot from a distance of around 25 yards. The ball flew like a rocket and such was the power of Mboma's shot, it was still rising as it flew over the head of DR Congo goalkeeper Nkombe Tokala. | Other top Football stories: Links to more Football stories are at the foot of the page. | |||
