![]() | Monday, 12 November, 2001, 14:59 GMT Dunn's Goal of the Week ![]() BBC Sport Online's goal of the week is David Dunn's spectacular solo effort for the England Under-21s against their Dutch counterparts. The Blackburn midfielder has been pushing for a place in the full England squad with some virtuoso performances this season. His brilliant solo goal in Utrecht on Friday night is now going to make it very difficult for Sven-Goran Eriksson to ignore him. Dunn's goal has been compared to John Barnes's famous effort against Brazil in the Maracana in 1984. His mazy run started when he picked the ball up from substitute Shola Ameobi just inside the Dutch half.
A dip of the shoulder took Dunn past another challenge and into the area. He then evaded three Dutch defenders before slotting the ball past despairing keeper Jelle ten Roywelaar from nine yards. "I picked the ball up 15 yards into the half and I just kept running," Dunn said afterwards. "Luckily for me, things opened up and I saw a little gap, so I just slotted it in." England Under-21 coach David Platt said: "I kept thinking he was going to pass. "I thought things were going to close up, but once he got into the box, I expected him to score." The goal was of crucial importance to the England Under-21s, handing them a 2-2 draw in the first leg of their European Championship play-off. |
