![]() | Monday, 17 September, 2001, 16:49 GMT 17:49 UK Gerrard's Goal of the Week ![]() Steven Gerrard's superb strike for Liverpool against Merseyside rivals Everton is BBC Sport Online's Premiership Goal of the Week. Liverpool were stunned into action against Everton when they fell behind to Kevin Campbell's fourth minute goal. And it was the Reds' midfield master, Steven Gerrard, who provided the stunning response to silence the Goodison Park faithful.
The England star took all of 12 minutes to stamp his authority on the game, firing an exquisitely-placed shot past his namesake Paul Gerrard in the Everton goal. The goal proved a turning point for Gerard Houllier's side as they went on to dominate the local derby. Liverpool boss Houllier was suitably impressed by Gerrard's strike, but not at all surprised by the precocious 21-year-old's talent. "Steven got 10 goals last season with no penalties and no free-kicks, he can continue to do that and maybe even better," he said.
And team-mate John Arne Riise, who also scored a fine solo goal to wrap up Liverpool's win, was left in awe of the England star. "Steven is fantastic, the best player in Liverpool's squad," he enthused. |
