![]() | Monday, 22 April, 2002, 08:52 GMT 09:52 UK Taylor's immaculate timing ![]() West Brom 2-0 Crystal Palace As goals of the week come, Bob Taylor's strike for West Brom against Crystal Palace is unlikely to come out first in a beauty parade. Nine times out of 10 the Palace goalkeeper Alex Kolinko would have gobbled up Neil Clement's free-kick. Instead Kolinko spilled the former Chelsea player's shot, leaving Taylor the simplest of tasks to slot the ball home. As ugly a goal as you could imagine, but tell that to the 26,000 delirious Albion fans crammed into the Hawthorns. For them Taylor's goal was the equivalent of the eighth wonder of the world. For after 16 years in the doldrums, Taylor's goal confirmed that Albion were back in the top division. As Taylor himself so eloquently put it: "I've got my beloved Baggies to the promised land." How appropriate also, that just months after the death of that other Albion legend Jeff Astle, that it was Taylor who grabbed that vital goal. Now 35-years-old and in his second spell at the club, Taylor has played more than 250 times for Albion, scoring more than 100 goals. In 1992 the then West Brom manager Bobby Gould paid 300,000 for Taylor. In that first spell at the club he played 211 times in the league, scoring 96 goals. In 1993 Taylor was influential in getting West Brom out of the Second Division via the play-offs.
He also had a spell as captain when Alan Buckley was manager, before the arrival of Lee Hughes forced Taylor out of the side. He then left for Bolton, before current West Brom manager Gary Megson brought him back to the Hawthorns for 90,000 in March 2000. It proved a canny purchase as Taylor scored five goals in the last six games of the season to keep West Brom in the First Division. This season Taylor has often been on the bench as the likes of Jason Roberts, Danny Dichio and Scott Dobie have also been at Megson's disposal. On Sunday though Taylor showed that like all great strikers timing is everything. |
