A bedroom fire at a terraced house was caused by a mobile phone left charging on a bed, the fire service has said.

Firefighters from St Mary's and Redbridge stations were called to the home on Denzil Avenue, Southampton, shortly before 08:45 GMT.

They arrived to find smoke billowing from the first-floor bedroom and used water jets to put out the flames before ventilating the home. The fire service said no one was hurt.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue Service has highlighted the importance of its battery and charger safety advice, including only using the charger that comes with a device, and unplugging it once it is fully charged.
