An outdoor activity centre could be forced to close because of a "catastrophic" failure of its main waste system, a scout group has warned.

Southampton City Scouts said they discovered the ruined septic system shortly after taking over Woodmill Outdoor Centre in September 2025. The group has launched a £120,000 appeal to replace it.

The riverside centre is used for water-based activities by thousands of children every year.

Its current owner, Southampton City Council, said it was "working closely with the scouts to support them".

A deal to sell much of the site to Southern Water and transfer the leisure area to the scouts for a nominal £1 was announced in July 2025.

The sale has not yet been finalised, although the scouts took charge in September through a temporary arrangement.

Josh Smith from the scout group said: "Our volunteers have poured their hearts, six months of time, and tens of thousands of pounds of charity money into transforming the site.

"We are seeking immediate support for a temporary solution so we don't have to tell thousands of children that their summer of adventure is cancelled."

The site could have to shut "within weeks" although no bookings have yet been cancelled, Smith added.

He said the council had so far agreed to provide a portable toilet as a temporary measure.

Southampton councillor Toqeer Kataria, in charge of leisure, said: "We are working closely with the Scouts to support them after the failure of the septic system on their site.

"This is a setback as the scouts have been making great progress on improving this unique asset for the city.

"We remain committed to the scouts running this facility and it being a community hub for outdoor activities, water sports, education and supporting the wildlife in this habitat."
