A Labour party group says it removed an image from its social media account showing Jeffrey Epstein and Nigel Farage together after realising it was created by artificial intelligence (AI).

Wrexham Labour Party posted the image on X on Tuesday after it was widely shared on the platform, and showed Epstein with his arm around the Reform UK leader.

Welsh Labour said the volunteer-run account took the post down when they realised it was AI-generated.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Farage said: "I never met Epstein and I didn't go to the island."

The Wrexham Labour Party posted the picture attempting to link the Reform leader to the disgraced financier, who died in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial for sex trafficking charges.

He was convicted for soliciting prostitution from a 14-year-old girl a decade earlier.

After the BBC asked Welsh Labour where the Wrexham group got the image, the picture was deleted.

BBC Wales understands Welsh Labour asked the individuals who operate the account to delete the image.

A Welsh Labour spokesperson said: "The photo was posted from a volunteer-run account run by local members.

"The post was taken down when they realised it was an AI-generated image."

A Reform UK Wales spokesperson said the post "is the sort of vile misinformation and smear that should be beneath a major governing political party".

They added: "Unless swift action is taken on this matter, the Labour party will be sending a message that sharing dangerous smears is acceptable in politics."
